But did you know that Wandinha is not the character’s real name?
Originally, the eldest daughter of the Addams was named Wednesday, which in English means Wednesday. Charles Addamscreator of the morbid family comics, was inspired by an American lullaby to choose the name of the character.
The song entitled “Monday’s Child” (in free translation, “Child of Monday”), from 1838, became quite popular due to its guessing content. That’s because the song said what a child’s future would be like. according to the day of the week she was born.
With the exception of Wednesday, every other day of the week in the song had positive characteristics. According to the lyrics of the song, “Wednesday’s child is full of anguish”. So, Morticia and Gomez decided that their daughter would be called Wednesday to have a lot of anguish, as the song promised.
The track also ended up revealing what Wandinha’s personality would be like. In the original verse of the song, which is “Wednesday’s child is full of woe”, we can translate “woe” as anguish, but it can also mean affliction and misfortune. All these characteristics are very strong in the character’s way.
When the stories of the Addams Family arrived in Brazil, there was a process of translating lines and even names, in order to achieve a greater identification with the Brazilian reality, something done with all productions that arrive in the country. And since the Brazilians didn’t know the song in which Charles Addams inspired, they thought it better to give the character another name.
It is worth remembering that Wandinha did not always have that name. In reality, all the characters were nameless until they got their television versions.
Charles Addams created the Addams Family comics in the 1930s. At that time, the stories were published in the New Yorker and did not have a defined personality, characterization or names.
