Women take center stage in theater management

Each of these five women is advocating for equality in the theater world through the leadership of the National Drama Center. For us, in the spotlight, they pose and speak.

Their names are Julie, Mael, Pauline, they are in their thirties or nearing their forties, they attended conservatory or theater school. Actresses, they created their collective and moved on to directing, facing reality, questioning the world, breathing more poetry into it. This new generation of author-directors took over the management of theaters, national drama centers (CDN) after being imposed on the councils.

Together, 18 CDN directors wrote the first forum in December 2021, highlighting inequalities between men and women. A strong gesture. they were joined by CDN directors in Avignon this summer to sign a charter for equality of programming and production resources. Solidarity binds these women. Key words stick to their conversation: space, decentralization, public service… Even if today they lead 46% of the CDNs, the national theaters are still managed by men… Jean Villard said: society, after which maybe we will make a good theater.
