The Sakharov Prize is the main award of the European Union in the field of human rights. It will be awarded in Strasbourg on December 14th.
On Thursday, October 13, representatives of the European Parliament formed a short list of candidates for the Andrei Sakharov Prize for freedom of thought. This is reported on the website of the European Parliament.
It is known that every year Parliament gives an award to recognize outstanding people and organizations that protect human rights and fundamental freedoms. Last year, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny received the award for his fight against corruption and human rights abuses by the Kremlin regime.
This year, the top three finalists are:
-
The brave citizens of Ukraine represented by President Zelensky, elected leaders and civil society;
-
Julian Assange, one of the WikiLeaks activists;
-
Colombian Truth Commission.
The brave Ukrainian people, represented by President Volodymyr Zelensky, were nominated by the European People’s Party.
“Russia’s unprovoked aggressive war against Ukraine, launched in February 2022, is causing the Ukrainian people great losses in the form of dead people and destroyed cities and villages. The Ukrainian people are fighting to protect their homes, sovereignty, freedom and territorial integrity, but every day they also fight for freedom, democracy, the rule of law and European values on the battlefield, said the nomination.
The S&D and Renew Europe groups nominated the people of Ukraine, emphasizing the role of individuals, representatives of civil society initiatives, the state and public institutions.
The nomination mentions, in particular, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine; Yulia Paevskaya, founder of the evacuation medical unit “Angels of Tayra”; human rights activist Oleksandra Matviychuk; “Yellow Ribbon” civil resistance movement; Ivan Fedorov, mayor of temporarily occupied Melitopol.
