Maria Grazia Chiuri presented a sumptuous spring-summer 2023 collection in honor of Catherine de’ Medici in a royal-inspired Tuileries garden setting.
Outside, the Dior show structure, a large rectangle set in the middle of the Tuileries Gardens, stands imposing and immaculate. Inside, on the contrary, the atmosphere is intimate. Dim lights reveal a baroque grotto, a cardboard master sculpture created by artist Eva Jospen. This contrast mainly symbolizes the spirit of the spring-summer 2023 collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri: the visible and the hidden, the public and the intimate, the real and the imaginary, the past and the present of the history of women, or rather women.

Catherine de’ Medici, Dior woman
One person in particular inspires Catherine de Medici, artistic director of Dior’s women’s lines. This 16th century politician never ceases to fascinate. He just gave her a new series. The snake queen , adapted from a book published in 2006. With this parade, Maria Grazia Chiuri should emphasize the power of this woman of power and remember her influence on luxury. The Italian, who arrived at the French court in 1533, is particularly known for initiating many fashions, including popularizing the corset and high heels.
The Dior collection revisits the Medici silhouette in an ultra-modern way the core of the regent modern. Crinoline mini dresses, taffeta lace shorts unbuttoned, jumpsuits worn with puffy sleeve tops, lace-up shoes with sexy kitten heels… It’s Catherine de Medici flying out of bed. The woman before she takes the regent’s dress. It exudes an implied femininity, powerful yet radically soft, because nothing in this wardrobe is restrictive.
Women’s choice
For this collection, Maria Grazia Chiuri also draws from her own journey, fusing references to French and Italian cultural heritage, two countries that are now her own. So we find an image of a map of Paris on a black and white leather trench from the archives of the House of Dior. She also revisits the Parisienne look with a beige trench coat and elegant couture jeans. Fashion provides an opportunity to play different roles, to express different sides of one’s personality, to decide what a woman can or wants to reveal in the public sphere, or keep for the private sphere. Sometimes everything gets mixed up. But it should remain the choice of women. Maria Grazia Chiuri reaffirms this in her own way with this collection.
Front row actresses Isabelle Adjani, Camille Cotin, Rosamund Pike, Shailene Woodley, Natalie Portman or Black Pink’s singer Jisoo, who creates hysteria with every appearance, mostly applauded the show, as well as Dutch choreographers and dancers Imre and Marne van Performance of opstals.
