We push the door of SO/ Paris, the new 5-star hotel in the capital that everyone is talking about, in the company of architect Denis Montel of the RDAI agency, who signs the decor of this elegant place and 100% view. .
It’s called SO/ Paris and it’s the capital’s new 5-star hotel that everyone is talking about. It is located in the young La Félicité district at 17 boulevard Morland in Paris, a monumental 16-story building built in the 1960s on the banks of the Seine and formerly occupied by the city’s urban development department. Paris, now located in the 13th. It hosts 162 rooms and suites located from 8e on the 14the the floor is above the rooftops of Paris. They all offer breathtaking views. Its lofty restaurant, Bonnie, on the 15th and 16th floors, is organized by the Paris Society. As for the spa, the treatments are signature Maison Codage. This is what makes you dream. To get a preview of this extraordinary place, take a private tour with architect Denis Montel, who leads the agency RDAI, to whom we owe the development of this wonderful address. A chance to steal some decorating ideas for the home.
Rooms and suites
“In terms of atmosphere, there are no fundamental differences between rooms and suites. What changes is the space. But for the atmosphere, we have developed a uniform tone and real comfort everywhere. Therefore, there is a lot of wood, a material that brings a very warm side; laminate floors in the entryways and throughout the suites, a large flagstone that rests on the bathrooms and walk-in closets, lacquered in squirrel color and covered in wood slats. .
16 unusual hotels to try in France
We also thought about how to give a sense of space. The bathrooms thus worked semi-transparently. the dressing rooms are porous. So there is no separation. And the fact that there is no closed perspective helps to bring a very hopeful side. What is also central is the signature of these rooms and the hotel in general. This SO/ is the first in France. This luxury hotel brand from the Ennismore Group has locations in Berlin, Bangkok, Havana, Singapore… But this is its first foray into France. And in a very Parisian location with an extraordinary view of the Seine. To anchor the hotel in this environment, it first went through the colors, which oscillate around three tones: gray blue, a slightly intense orange and yellow. If these colors give a tone, they are especially those that dominate the Parisian night when one looks at the Seine. Do the experiment, look for photos of Paris at night and you will see these colors in the pictures. To emphasize this choice, we worked hard on the lighting, completely indirect and hidden. When we turn it on in the evening, we see the same lights as outside. Mirror sets add a little extra. And we went further, envisioning the interconnectedness of volumes that allows us to create perspectives, frame breathtaking views everywhere, and expand multiple windows; are in at least 2 bedrooms and up to 10 in a row. – like arrays. For this, we have created low-volume entrances from the bedroom, which are highlighted by a monochrome orange-brown ceiling and parquet. This creates a frame effect that opens outwards.
Twenty unusual hotels to stay in around the world
Fun and chic
Every detail is thought out with this in mind. So in the bathrooms we used a small mosaic of copper glass paste that vibrates and sparkles. For the furniture, we played the originality card with huge pieces of furniture such as large armchairs, but also with nomadic pieces such as mobile coffee tables, the top of which can become a breakfast tray in bed. There are leather bags hanging on the wall. even a classic storage unit that, like a trolley, moves along the wall. It’s playful and gorgeous, full of tricks. »
The decorative idea of u200bu200bbiting Nomadic and multifunctional furniture is a real plus in a small apartment. coffee table-tray; bed chair; trolleybus panel-desk… Brands offer more and more smart furniture.
The lobby
“The building in SO/Paris is a tower, what we call a ‘high-rise’, and that involves a lot of restrictions in terms of evacuation, fire prevention… steel, glass and concrete. Not very sexy in appearance. But we took advantage of it. The walls are lined with large slabs of carved cognac glass. They are decorated with a motif inspired by the geometry of the stone foundations of Haussmann’s buildings. Because in this lobby it was also important to breathe the Parisian signature. It is found on the ground, with terrazzo taking the “peacock tail”, a kind of rounded triangle, which is a classic of the capital’s pavements. These Parisian references, even subliminal, register the hotel in its history. The use of glass also allowed us to correct the narrowness of the lobby, which, after all, is not very large compared to the size of the hotel. It has some big corridor, and these glass panels, thanks to the reflections, make it possible to multiply it by 2, 3… It seems that the space is expanding; it’s pretty funny. They encountered another obstacle in the lobby. the presence of 8 reinforced concrete columns that were not lined up and that could not be knocked down. We placed them in plaster cylinders with slightly different dimensions that allow us to recreate the alignment. In the upper part, they are designed like flower petals. It gives an arched, almost organic feel. Adding a mirror allows these elements to “bounce” off the walls. All this is accompanied by concrete and marble furnishings, including concrete benches with a sculptural line. We put leather pads on them to make them comfortable. With a chic and warm touch, this use of concrete shows that you can turn an unloved material into an asset. Finally, we have to talk about the “background” of this lobby, where the giant decor catches the eye upon arrival, which appears to be a wooden layout. However, they are patinated metal sheets that reproduce level curves. When we designed the project, we consulted the many archives of this district, which was once an island, Louviers Island, and we discovered contour line engravings that were used to create this abstract and sculptural element.
Remember the nearby Sen
There’s another subtle geometric motif throughout the hotel, especially in the elevators, some of the light fixtures, and of course, the expansive front door. They are large concentric circles. we designed them thinking about the ripples created by a pebble thrown into water. It is also a way to remember the presence of a nearby Sen.
The decorative idea of u200bu200bbiting Remember to always pair a “poor” material with a more luxurious one. The plastic stool is modified with a leather cushion placed on the seat. We can push the trick further. Thus, plywood furniture can be enhanced by placing beautiful ceramics, designer lighting, etc. on it.
Spa
“It is quite modest in size, with a reception area, two cabins and a hammam. We imagined it in the relative continuity of the rooms. If we drop our range color “Night Paris” for emerald green; light is always indirect and enveloping. The wooden paneling of the lobby, the floor tiles that look old but are modern bring a very natural and warm aspect. The cabins are lacquered in emerald green, with a wooden wall with a sliding wall that allows you to hide the most technical parts and accessories. Minimal decor includes nomadic details like leather-wrapped bars to hang your robe or towel on.”
The bathroom is even more fun, completely covered in 5mm x 5mm micromosaics. Thanks to their very small format, they allowed us to dress this space in all its curves and bring the bubble side.”
The decorative idea of u200bu200bbiting Discreet and elegant, the wall-mounted or foot-mounted rods, mostly covered in leather, are the perfect “spare” options for the bathroom or toilet.
And also… Bonnie
The interior design of Bonnie, restaurant, bar and club was entrusted to Notoire agency. On the bar side, the gaze travels to the Bastille or lingers on the library of mirrors, the black stone bar and its marble counter. You can’t see the passing of time in long sofas and curly woolen armchairs.
The club itself, with its clay-colored sofas, bubble lamps, chrome tables and backlit glass-tiled bar, offers a dazzling view of the Seine.
Just like the restaurant, the atmosphere of which is described by the founder of Notoire agency, Jordan Arivetz. the spatial and kaleidoscopic Olafur Eliasson and the elegant and festive spirit of Parisian society. The 1960s, when the building was built, inspired our story. A period of women’s glory and emancipation and a response to Cardin’s style…”
