The horror movie about the Cinderella half sister you haven’t seen

Find out what is the horror movie released this year that brings a new approach by following one of Cinderella’s half-sister

Cinderella’s story everyone already knows! After all, besides the tale of the French writer Charles Perraultfrom 1697, the story has gained several adaptations for cinema and TV, following the orphaned princess who is mistreated by stepmother and sister half until she finds the enchanted prince who allows her to change her life.

But have you ever wondered what the history of Cinderella’s half-sister? If you have already been curious, there is a chance to discover the wishes and fears of one of them in a movie that mixes the genres of horror and comedy that you probably have not watched, as the plot has no launch marked in Brazil yet.

What is the movie?

The feature film in question is “The Ugly Stepsister”, a Norwegian title that premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival, and then received a limited release, occupying selected cinemas from countries such as Norway, Poland, Sweden and Denmark from April 18, while following Elvira, who is always referred to as the Ugly Sister of Agnes, also known as Cindela.

In the plot, when the family’s father dies and financial difficulties arise, the solution found so that they do not fall into misery is to make Elvira marry the prince. The mission, however, is not easy. After all, competing with Cinderella and in a kingdom where beauty can be brutal, Elvira will undergo painful transformations to make the little crystal slipper really serve on her foot.

Before researching more about the title, it’s good to keep in mind: the movie is not for children! This is because, in a distorted version of Cinderella’s classic history – which also shows that the beautiful princess may not be as good as portrayed in popular plots – Norwegian screenwriter and director, Emilie Blichfeldtmakes his debut towards feature films continuing the theme present in his short films: to question what beauty is in modern society and how it impacts women’s lives.

For this, “The Ugly Stepsister” clings to body horror, a subgenre of horror cinema, in order to show Elvira undergoing aesthetic interventions (based on 18th century real medical procedures) to adapt to the beauty standards of the time, and who knows how to arouse the interest of the prince.

How “The Ugly Stepsister” arose?

At Screenrant, the director said that the idea for the film came up in a daydream while writing another story.

“I had a vision where my character dreamed it was Cinderella and put on the shoe and was very happy because the prince was the boy of his dreams, or something. But then, to his horror and despair, she realized that he had cut his fingers to put on his shoe, because there was blood coming out of the shoe,” he said. “When I woke up from that nap, I thought,” My God, this is a character I had never seen before. “

She then says she took eight years to form the idea, five of those just to realize the script, as she wanted something “with my DNA, my story, my perspective on it and then with body terror,” the subgenre is defended by her as something that would naturally show the message she wants to pass.

Moreover, stating that “we all yearn for being loved,” the filmmaker also said she identifies herself with the character, since in another chat, granted to Variety, she told how her experiences connect with the character’s story.

“I had never felt a connection with this character before,” said Blichfeldt. “I also grew up finding them horrible and empathizing for Cinderella, hoping that I was that girl. But suddenly the chip fell: I spent a lot of time trying to fit in too small shoes, fighting with the image and desperately dreaming that I would fit into beauty standards. When I rediscover this already adult character, because she is the character that I have always been.”

To bring this story to life, the characters are lived by names not so well known in large industry, asLea Myren that interprets Elvira, Isac Calmrothwho is Prince Julian and Thea sofieLock næss that gives life to Agnes. Ane Dahl Torp and Malte Gårdinger They are also in the cast.

“The Ugly Stepsister” has a Fresh seal on Rotten Tomatoes, with 96% approval of expert critics and 7/10 grade at IMDB.
