In the sixth episode of the second season of ‘The Last of Us’, there is an unprecedented character for the franchise; Find out who he is!
HBO series that won the penultimate episode of season two on the night of last Sunday, 18, “The Last of Us” is an adaptation of the universe created by Bruce Straley and Neil Druckmann At Naughty Dog’s homonymous games, having the first title released in 2013 – which was presented in the first season – and the sequence in 2020, both widely acclaimed by fans.
The second game has had the narrative addressed during the season number two of TV and streaming production. However, when content is adapted to a different format from the one in which it came about, it is common to notor some differences and how the narrative unfolds, as in the sixth and latest episode of the series, where there is something new compared to “The Last of Us Part II”: the inclusion of an unprecedented character!

It turns out that early in the episode, there is a flashback from Joel (Pedro Pascal), the cold-blooded smuggler who in the first season is presented as responsible for escorting Ellie (Bella Ramsey), the only young man infected with the Cordyceps fungus that survived, out of the military quarantine zone, as the girl could help create a cure against the infection that has almost devastated the human life of the earth for years.
At this time when the series visits the past, an excerpt from Joel’s youth and his brother Tommy is shown (Gabriel Luna), in Austin, Texas, in the United States, during the 1980s. At the time, Tommy vents to Joel about the fear he feels to be punished after he and his brother have moved into a confusion involving drugs, but Joel reassures him that he will deal with the consequences alone when his father is taking satisfaction from what happened.
Tommy and Joel’s father is Javier Miller, played by Tony Dalton (“Better Call Saul”), who is a police officer. He was never presented at the franchise games.
When it comes, Javier question Joel about the situation, even knowing everything that had happened to the children. Joel then tries to protect his brother taking all the blame, and asks his father not to hit his youngest – which leads them to a frank conversation about paternity, where the policeman reports a situation of violence that he lived with his father, saying he tries to be better than the one who raised him, and hopes that, the time of Joel, his son is better than he was.
The sequence reveals how the experiences that Joel had in the past shaped him and made him who is in the relationship with Ellie, with whom he assumes the role of protective father. These experiences also explain how he got into complex situations that led to the wear and tear of the girl, and bring more weight to a dialogue he has with her in the future.
