Plazoring the public when receiving 8 points of 10 at IMBD, with an accumulation of more than 5,000 evaluations, the plot of the chapter stands out further for the deepening of one of the main elements of the game: the Serafites.
With the first glimpses of the group being introduced in the third episode of the sequence, while Ellie and Dina walk Seattle in search of ABBY’s revenge for Joel’s death, with this week’s release, they finally arrive completely for the series.
After all, who are the serafites?
Serafitas, also known as “scars”, according to the game that inspires film production, are a reactionary religious faction that emerged shortly after the collapse of the world caused by the Cordyceps pandemic. Inspired by a spiritual figure known only as “the prophetess,” members follow a primitive, faith, reconnecting with nature and simplicity.
The group is in isolation in a remote region of Seattle and communicates through whistles, hunting with arches and avoiding the use of technology as much as possible. Its members perform an initiation ritual in which they mark the face with a deep scar, symbol of humility and obedience, hence the nickname.
Prophetess and conflict with WLF
The prophetess was the founder of the faction, in which she was characterized by being pacifist and egalitarian, and believed that the only way to rebuild humanity was through harmony between human beings and nature. The result of the welcome of her ideologies made her a living legend and, after her death, a true religious icon.
But not everything remained true to its principles, for after its execution by the WLF militia, the leadership of the Serafites passed to more radical hands, which hardened the rituals and turned the group into a brutal force against anyone who did not share the same faith.
The confrontation between the factions is one of the central points of the plot, which initially the two groups tried to coexist, but ideological differences and disputes for territory quickly caused disagreements. Thus, resulting from an attack on a WLF supplies cart, the Serafites began a cycle of violence that led to the death of the prophetess and the radicalization of worship. Since then, hatred between them has only grown.
The sixth and last episode of the second season of ‘The Last of Us’ premieres May 18 at HBO and Max.
