The Academy of Cinematographic Arts has officially allowed films created using artificial intelligence to apply for an Oscar.
Films created or advanced using AI can now get an Oscar. The corresponding updates have been published by the Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, BBC reports.
New policies suggest that the use of AI “does not provide advantage, but not an obstacle” for nomination. At the same time, when voting, the academy promises to consider people’s contribution to the creation of movies. Such changes are recommended by the scientific and technical rada of the academy.
An example of the influence of new technologies is the film “Brutalist”, where with the help of AI they have improved Hungarian accent Edian Brody – the actor has received a reward for the best paper male. And in the musical “Emilia Peres”, which also received Oscar, AI used to improve voice parties.
Despite this, the use of artificial intelligence in the cinema remains a controversial theme for many artists who are afraid of the loss of creative identity.
In addition, now all the members of the Academy are required to watch all the movies in the categories where they vote – and confirm it through the internal streaming platform of the Academy Screening Room. In the case of viewing outside the platform, it is necessary to submit a special form with viewing details.
Previously, such requirements were only concerned with international, animated and short films – now the rule covers the entire premium.
Earlier it was reported officially announced by the American Film Academy that the 98th Oscar Award Ceremony was held on March 15, 2026.
