Meet Big o! CEAN
Big Ocean is the first K-pop group to have all members with hearing impairment. The training debuted on April 20, 2024 – when, in South Korea, the National Day of People with Disabilities is celebrated – under the seal of ParaStar Entertainment, with the disclosure of “Glow”, a remake of “Hope”, lane of the Hot Group, launched in 1998.
The trio, whose name can be translated into “big ocean”, wants to convey to fans the possibilities of a better tomorrow, as the “ocean is a place where people feel calm and peaceful” and “Big o! CEAN expects one day to spread hope and positive energy”, as explained by members about the meaning of the name reverberated by the portal KProfiles.
Since they debuted, they prove to be able to spread the positive message that guides the existence of the group, as they are revolutionizing the music industry by proving that with inclusion it is possible to reach amazing places, after all, their performances are interpreted in the language of Korean signals (KSL), making clear the idea that music should be felt.
More than that, through the history of each of the members it is also possible to feel the idea that the trio wants to pass, since their trajectory is full of overcoming and talent; look:
- Lee Chanyeon: He lost hearing after a fever at age 11. Before debuting as Idol, he graduated from the Department of Speech Therapy and Hearing Rehabilitation at Woosong University in South Korea, and worked as a speech therapist at the University of Korea Anam Hospital. He also plays guitar.
- Park Hyunjin: He had a hearing loss also after a fever at the age of 2. He, who today uses a cochlear implant to listen to, is the group’s main singer, as well as knowing how to play piano, having the habit of spreading awareness messages about the causes related to hearing loss on social networks and also having a second profession, as he has a diploma in computer engineering from Daegu University in South Korea.
- Kim Jiseok: He was born with hearing impairment and uses hearing aids. Idol, whose specialty is modeling, occupies the position of main dancer in the group.
Still, they want to create their own musical genre called S-Pop (Pop in Sign Language), as the intention of the three is to create songs in the Korean Sign Language (KSL), American Sign Language (ASL) and international sign language (IS) so that the Pado (as the Big O! CEAN) can know.
To this day, the group’s discography also includes the singles “Blow”, released on June 1, 2024; “Slow”, a collaboration with Youngk of the day6, which emerged on August 11, 2024; and “Bright”, from February 10 this year, as well as the mini album “Follow”, which was included on the musical streaming platforms on November 12 last year.
