Why were ‘Round 6’ and ‘Parasite’ successful? Director reveals

Find out what is the detail that the director of ‘Parasite’, Hwang Dong-Hyuk, listed as responsible for connecting the audience with the movie and ‘Round 6’

Overcoming borders, the contents coming from South Korea has been increasingly popularized around the world! This true cultural phenomenon even has a name: Hallyu, which corresponds to the Korean wave that began from the 1990s with the export of TV soap operas known as K-Dramas, music, called K-Pop and a variety of films.

Great examples of plots that have become great hits on the whole globe are the Netflix series “Round 6”, whose episodes explore a bloodthirsty game in which indebted competitors risk their lives in exchange for a millionaire award, and the “parasite” feature film, a thrill with comedy elements that accompanies a poor family that finds socially ascending very infiltrating the house of a very familiar group rich.

In the case of the show, it became the largest South Korean title on the streaming platform, and made history on Emmy 2022, when actor Lee Jung Jae, the protagonist’s interpreter Seong Gi Hun won the award for best actor, and HWANG DONG-HYUK He became the owner of the best-direction statuette, both in the dramatic series category, marking the first wins for a predominantly spoken series in a non-human language in the prize.

Already the film, which raised more than $ 260 million worldwide, also joined the list of historical achievements of South Korean productions by being the first foreign film to take the top prize of the Oscar-the best movie. The plot also won the categories of best director, best international film and best original script, as well as winning titles at the Cannes Festival, Golden Globe, Bafta and many other awards.

But where does all this acclaim come from? The director of ‘parasite’, BONG JOON-HOended up analyzing and reaching a conclusion during an interview to promote his new movie, “Mickey 17”.

THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

Talking to The New York Times (via Screenrant), the filmmaker commented that he was not focused on the American audience while making the 2019 movie, and that in a conversation with the creator of “Round 6”, HWANG DONG-HYUKhe eventually realized how the two narratives connected with people from outside the Asian east country.

This is because plots exploit life under the “hierarchy of society” and “capitalism”, which is reality in most countries. In this way, the narrative is understood at global level for portraying something that everyone already understands.

“[Enquanto fazia Parasita]I never thought “this will translate well globally”. But I talked to Hwang Dong-Hyuk, the director who made Round 6, and he told me he never had that intention either. He simply did, and is on Netflix, so he spread around the world. But it was not surprising because parasite and round 6 were about the hierarchy of society. Simply put, they are about capitalism. And, except for one or two countries, all live under capitalism – it is a universal language. “

Today, “Round 6” has two seasons available on Netflix, with the third on the way, which is scheduled to premiere on June 27. Already “parasite”, can be found in the catalog of Max.

In addition, “Mickey 17” can be seen in Brazilian theaters starting tomorrow, 6. The film has the following synopsis: “An employee is sent in a human expedition to colonize Niflheim’s cold world. After a iteration dies, a new body is regenerated with most of his intact memories”; See the trailer:
