5 things to know before the channel gets off the air

1. History of Disney Channel

Appearing in 1983 as a premium channel in the United States, Disney Channel debuted with the show of the program “Mickey Mouse Club” of the 1950s. The channel’s family programming soon won original titles produced for decades by The Walt Disney Company, among them , a new version of the 1950s varieties show that marked the channel’s release, with comic skits, commercial parodies, music videos, famous guests and a cast of young talented artists, who presented names like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake.

From the 1990s, the Disney Channel began crossing borders and reaching other countries, and now becoming a paid channel via cable. Among these, Brazil was the next to receive the channel, which exhibited the program of Disney Channel for the first time in 2001, bringing Zapping Zone, the first original Brazilian production of the channel.

2. The decision

With the huge success, why will Disney Channel leave Brazil? In a statement, Disney explained on December 2 last year that the choice is a response to “transformations in the local media scenario.”

“In response to transformations in the local media and entertainment scenario, and to ensure that we continue to evolve and meet the needs of our consumers with agility and innovation, we have decided to discontinue the operation of some linear channels in Brazil,” Disney said in a statement.

3. Other channels?

Yes! It’s not just the Disney Channel that will leave the country. In the same statement, Disney also said that the Star Channel, Cinecanal, FX, National Geographic, Disney Channel and Baby TV channels will no longer air either. The only one that will remain is ESPN, a sports channel that brings broadcasts from various major events such as NBA, NFL and Libertadores.

4. When does the Disney Channel leaves?

The channels will no longer be broadcast on subscription TVs on February 28, 2025.

5. Where to watch the Disney Channel catalog?

All content displayed on the beloved channel, including their original productions, can already be found in the Disney+streaming platform catalog.

It turns out that Disney’s streaming service has undergone a recent transformation with the merger with Star+ and now brings all the productions that receive the Mickey House seal, among them, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic titles, besides Searchlight and 20th Century Studios works.
