Discover the true meaning behind the name “KickFlip”, JYP Entertainment’s new K-pop boy group
This Monday, the 20th, KickFlip, JYP Entertainment’s new boy group, made their long-awaited debut with the album “Flip it, Kick it!”, accompanied by the title track “Mama Said”, which featured the participation of member Amaru in the letter composition. Watch!
In addition to “Mama Said”, the album “Flip it, Kick it!” it also has five more songs. They are: WARRIORS”, “Knock Knock”, Like A Monster”, “See You On Tomorrow”, and “Umm Great”, a track that served as a pre-release, anticipating the long-awaited debut, and also received an animated music video.
Formed by seven members, KickFlip is made up of four members who were finalists on the reality show LOUD, a partnership between PSY and JY Park (Kyehoon, Amaru, Keiju and Donghyeon), and three new members, who were just JYP trainees (Donghwa, Juwang and Minje).
But, what is the meaning behind the name ‘KickFlip’?
Promising to present an energetic and fun concept, the name KickFlip may be very familiar to sports fans, as it refers to a classic skateboard maneuver, where the athlete kicks the front of the board, causing it to rotate 360 degrees.
With their debut, the new boy group joins a roster of major artists under the JYP Entertainment label, including names like TWICE, 2PM, Stray Kids, ITZY, NMIXX, DAY6, and more. During the debut showcase, held this Monday, the 20th, the septet even revealed their admiration and the support they have received from their “sunbaenims” (seniors).
While answering questions from the press, the artists stated that they take Stray Kids as one of their main inspirations, and that they aspire to become artists “who put our names in many songs and share our thoughts as Stray Kids sunbaenim”.
Still at the showcase, Juwang highlighted advice he received from Changbin and INmembers of Stray Kids, to ensure that they stay together for a long time. According to the idol, the stars said that “for a team to last 7 or 10 years, good teamwork is essential, and it’s okay to fight as long as you make up later.”
During the preparation for its debut, KickFlip also had the opportunity to work alongside Young Kmember of the band DAY6, who is credited in the lyrics of “WARRIORS”, a track on the debut album “Kick it, Flip it!”, a moment described as an “honor” by Keiju.
Second Minjae“Young K sunbaenim participated in the recording sessions and gave us advice. He always emphasized that teams with free-spirited maknaes (younger members) tend to last longer. Since we already take good care of our maknae, and maintain a happy atmosphere, I think it will be great to maintain that vibe in the future.”
Donghyunthe youngest member, completed his groupmate’s speech by revealing that “this advice really resonated with me. My hyungs (older members) already try to create a comfortable environment without strict hierarchy, and I am very happy living like that.”
