In his first interview after 11 years, TOP opened up about his departure from BIGBANG and his current relationship with G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung
Last Wednesday, the 15th, the actor and singer Choi Seung-hyunthe TOPconducted his first interviews in 11 years, where he spoke a little more about his life in recent years, his career in music, his successful participation in “Round 6”, as well as his shocking departure from BIGBANG in 2023.
In conversation with the South Korean portal Sports Kyunghang (via Koreaboo), the star was asked about his current relationship with G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesungthe current members of BIGBANG, and the reason for his departure and for having acted harshly at times when related to the group.
Head down, TOP responded that “I am someone who caused great harm to BIGBANG and my former company due to the mistakes I made in the past”, referring to his drug controversy in 2017. The star also explained that he spent years saying that he would like to leave the formation so as not to cause further harm to YG Entertainment and the other members.
“Now, if I did something on my own, I would have to bear the criticism and scolding for it, but if I went back to the team I caused harm to, the members would be labeled with the label of my mistakes anyway, and I I would feel embarrassed and it would be painful for me, so I said I would leave a long time ago, but when I read posts from fans or people like that who want a reunion, even I feel heartbroken. Because I wanted to make it clear, but because I’m meeting reporters like this after 11 years, there was no channel where I could say these things, and when I read posts from fans who wanted a reunion and see photos of the members, I feel guilty. In fact, as someone who left, seeing photos of my family brings unspeakable pain and suffering to anyone who wasn’t involved. That’s why I think it was unwise to choose this method, but that wasn’t my intention”, he said.
The reporter also took the opportunity to ask the TOP if the other members tried to prevent his departure from the group, with the idol responding that he shouldn’t talk about people he wasn’t present, and explaining that he is currently not in contact with the other members.
“I’m not in contact with the members right now. I don’t know exactly how long it’s been, but I think I’ve calmed down a little and (I think I can). I’m still sorry I haven’t been able to contact them yet. There are a lot of ambiguous parts now. I think it’s unwise to talk carelessly about members who aren’t here or people who aren’t here. It’s been exactly 5 to 6 years since I said I was leaving, after I was laid off from my social service.”, said the singer.
Seung-hyun continued his speech by saying, “I thought that the song called ‘STILL LIFE’ would be my last project as BIGBANG when my contract period ended, and I worked on it with all my might. I thought it was my last job, I released the results and (my contract) with the company expired, but the fans still want us to reunite, and I’m more heartbroken than angry. There are many photos where me and the members are tagged together, so I feel guilty for the members and I have to live with this feeling for the rest of my life, but I don’t think anyone can completely feel the pain of looking at a photo of a family separately, unless they are those involved. So I think I said it the wrong way, and I want to bow my head once again and apologize from the bottom of my heart.”
Despite the feeling of guilt, the singer highlighted to iNews24 that “I have no intention of erasing BIGBANG from my life. The members of BIGBANG are like a family, with whom I spent my bright and beautiful 20s. Even now and in the future, I won’t I feel nothing but pity for the BIGBANG members. I feel like I don’t deserve (to return to BIGBANG), it’s been too long to return.”
As for SisaWeek, TOP said that, due to feelings of guilt, he still cannot contact G-Dragon, Taeyang and Daesung easily, but revealed that he watched the group’s reunion during the 2024 MAMA Awards: “Of course, I watched (2024 MAMA performance). It was great. I will always wish these friends the best and will cheer them on in my heart for the rest of my life.” “.
