Find out why there were changes in the tones of the costume of the iconic DC hero, Superman, for the new film that premieres in 2025
In Los Angeles, during the ‘Superman’ trailer presentation event, the director James Gunn, and the hero’s interpreter, David Corenswetdiscussed the choice of the character’s new costume, which brings a more vibrant and colorful tone, contrasting with the more sober and dark look of the version of Henry Cavill first seen in ‘Man of Steel’.
Why did the hero’s costume take on a different tone?
The decision to adopt a more striking costume reflects the intention of rescuing the essence of the hero, faithful to the original vision of its creators (Via Omelete).
At the time, Corenswet He began by explaining the process of creating the costume and what the experience of wearing it for the first time was like. “When you have the incredible opportunity to build a suit from scratch with an incredible wardrobe department, you don’t put on the whole suit for the first time. You wear parts of it and then it’s fitted, and more pieces are put on. So for me , it was the first time that other people saw me in the costume”, said the actor. The most impactful moment for him, however, was seeing the children’s reaction. “The best thing is seeing children seeing the costume. When people on the crew would bring their kids on set… Getting to see firsthand, you know, a five or six year old see Superman. There is nothing like it. It’s incredible,” he recalled.
Right away, james gunn also shared his perspective on the choice of costume colors, explaining that the intention was to do something very different from the usual look.
“One thing I think about a lot is that when we were designing the suit, I knew certain things were going to be different. I knew I didn’t want it to look like a wet T-shirt. I didn’t want it to have a bunch of fake muscles on it. I I didn’t want to have airbrush abs on him. But it was really a long development process. And we were in the room, me, David and Judianna [Makovsky]our costume designer, who worked with me on ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’. And the costume was very colorful”, recalled the director. “And I was like, ‘Oh, I don’t know… it’s so colorful.’ AND David replied: ‘Yes, it’s colorful because he’s an alien from outer space who is super powerful but doesn’t want children to be afraid of him,'” he said. The reasoning of Corenswet ended up convincing Gunnwho saw the costume as a way to revisit the character’s true identity.
“And that moved me at that moment and it moves me now, when I tell this. That’s who Superman is. And that’s where the costume comes from,” said the director, reflecting on the importance of the choice. Gunn he further concluded, highlighting that this vision was aligned with the original proposal of the hero’s creators.
He further concluded: “This goes along with the original vision of Jerry [Siegel] and Joe [Shuster]referencing the wrestlers and the circus and these other things. And that’s what Superman is. And that’s why his costume is so colorful, because he doesn’t want to scare the kids. He has red rays coming out of his eyes. He can knock things over with his breath. But he doesn’t want to be scary for kids.”
By focusing on vibrant colors, Superman’s new costume reinforces the idea of an accessible and welcoming hero, while maintaining the character’s grandeur. The decision to make the hero closer to children, without losing his strength, reflects a new era for the iconic character, more faithful to his true nature.
