The director of the movie Goodbye Lenin has died!

Wolfgang Becker died after a long illness, his family said. The director is 70 years old.

German film director Wolfgang Becker, who directed the film Good Bye Lenin!, has died at the age of 70. This was reported by The Hollywood Reporter magazine.

According to Becker’s family, the director died on December 13 after a serious illness.

Wolfgang Becker was born in Gemer and studied film in Berlin. His student film Butterflies, an adaptation of a story by Ian McEwan, won a student Oscar.

In 1994, Becker founded the Berlin-based production company X Filme Creative Pool. His first feature film, Take Everything from Life (1997), was a commercial success. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won three awards.

Becker’s most famous film is the tragicomedy Good Bye Lenin! (2003) on family relations amid turbulent change in post-reunification Germany. Farewell, Lenin! recognized as the best German and European film of the year. He received seven Lola Awards, the highest award in German cinema, the French Cesar Award and an award at the Berlin Film Festival. The film was also nominated for BAFTA and Golden Globe awards for Best International Feature Film.

In addition to writing and directing, Becker has taught at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin, the Baden-Württemberg Film Academy and the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne.
