See what happens in the second part of the story

“Wicked”, showing in Brazilian cinemas, will be divided into two parts, inspired by the Broadway success. The sequel, “Wicked: Part 2,” is scheduled for November 2025.

The first part lasts 2 hours and 40 minutes, covering events from the first act of the play, allowing for a more in-depth development of the scenes, as composer Stephen Schwartz explains.

The second film will move forward in time in its narrative, explains the Today program. In “Wicked”, after the iconic number “Defying Gravity”, there is a temporal transition that introduces significant changes.

Warning: the next few paragraphs feature SPOILERS for ‘Wicked’!

Engagement and search for Elphaba

The beginning of the second act is marked by the song “Thank Goodness”, performed by Glinda and Madame Morrible, roles assumed by Ariana Grande and Michelle Yeoh, respectively.

In the musical plot, Ariana Grande’s character is now known as Glinda the Good, while the kingdom is consumed by fear of the Wicked Witch of the West, the Wizard’s declared adversary. At the same time, Glinda announces her engagement to Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, who recently rose to the rank of captain in the army of the Magician.

The second part of the film will explore the persistent chemistry between the characters and the unrequited feelings of Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, for Fiyero. Although Elphaba believed that she would not be reciprocated, the audience discovers that Fiyero’s true motivation for joining the Wizard’s army is his active search for the ‘Wicked Witch’.

During an attempt to free the winged monkeys he unwittingly created at the end of the first act, Elphaba confronts the Wizard. After failing to persuade her to rejoin him, the Wizard orders her capture. However, upon meeting Fiyero again, he chooses to help her escape instead of handing her over to the Magician’s authorities, deciding to abandon Glinda to flee alongside Elphaba.

New love

Meanwhile, Fiyero and Elphaba declare their mutual love through the emotional song “As Long As You’re Mine”. In the political landscape of Munchkinland, following the death of her father, Nessarose (played by Marissa Bode in the film) takes over as governor and imposes a harsh regime.

Meanwhile, Elphaba leads a campaign against the Magician. Nessarose’s relationship with Boq (played by Ethan Slater) fails, and he remains by her side more out of obligation than love.

In the second part of the narrative, the ‘Wicked Witch’ pays a visit to her younger sister, at which point Nessarose expresses his accumulated sorrows. In response, the character uses her powers to cast a spell on her sister’s silver shoes, allowing her to walk again. Faced with this change, Boq reveals his intention to leave to declare his true love for Glinda.

In a desperate act to win the character’s love, Elphaba’s sister turns to the spellbook Grimmerie. However, the spell goes wrong and reduces Boq’s heart. To save your life, Elphaba turns him into a man made of tin, able to survive without a heart. After these tumultuous events, Nessarose proclaims herself the Wicked Witch of the East.

Dorothy’s entrance

After Elphaba and Fiyero escape, Glinda reveals to Madame Morrible that a way to attract her former friend is attacking your sister. In an act of manipulation, Michelle Yeoh’s character creates a tornado, which results in a house falling on Nessarose, bringing Dorothy Gale into the world of Oz. Following the plot of “The Wizard of Oz”, Glinda gives Dorothy her old friend’s sister’s shoes and guides her to follow the yellow brick road towards the Emerald City.

Elphaba arrives at the scene of her sister’s death, only to find a trap which leads to Fiyero’s capture. During the song “No Good Deed”, she casts a spell to protect her beloved from pain.

Another surprising moment happens in “March of the Witch Hunters”, whenBoq is revealed to be the Tin Man from the original story, while the little lion saved by Fiyero and Elphaba in the first act becomes the iconic Cowardly Lion.

Still in the second part, the citizens of Oz invade Elphaba’s castle, where she keeps Dorothy detained, in an attempt to retrieve Nessarose’s shoes. Glinda, realizing the imminent danger posed by the angry mob, run to tell your friend.

With the mob angry, Glinda hides behind a curtain and witnesses Elphaba’s shadowy form melt after Dorothy throws a bucket of water over her.

At the end of the musical “Wicked”, the surprising revelation is that the character being pursued was not, in fact, killed, as previously thought. Another revelation is that the enchantment Elphaba cast to protect Fiyero turned him into a scarecrow. After the confrontation with Dorothy, he arrives at the castle to rescue his love, who was hidden under a secret door, and together they leave the land of Oz.

At the same time, Glinda confronts the Wizard after witnessing her friend’s apparent death, resulting in surprising revelations: the witch’s hat and the green bottle she always carried, belonging to her mother. Upon seeing the green elixir, the Magician realizes that Elphaba is actually his biological daughter, thus revealing the true identity of the mysterious man who gets involved with the protagonist’s mother.
