Wicked, which hits theaters on the 21st, promises to be one of the biggest releases of the year; understand the connection with the Wizard of Oz
The long-awaited film production directed by Jon M. Chu, “Wicked”, arrives in Brazilian cinemas on the 21st. The film acts as a prelude to the famous “The Wizard of Oz”literary work created by L. Frank Baum in 1900, whose characters Elphaba and Glinda are familiar to admirers of the classic narrative.
“The Wizard of Oz”, initially released as a book, tells the journey of Dorothy, a young girl who, accompanied by her dog Toto, is transported by a cyclone to a magical land. In her quest to return to Kansas, Dorothy needs help from the enigmatic Wizard of Oz and, during this search, he finds both allies and dangers in the enchanted world.
Within this adventure, Dorothy comes across two witches: Glinda, known as the Good Witch of the South, who helps the protagonist in crucial moments; and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, which represents an obstacle in Dorothy’s path. The notable film adaptation of this story was released in 1939, starring Judy Garland in the lead role.
Before Dorothy
On the other hand, “Wicked” offers a new perspective by exploring the events before Dorothy’s arrival to the Land of Oz. The film focuses on Elphaba and Glinda’s youth. Elphaba is portrayed as a young woman who is misunderstood due to her green skin and who has not yet discovered her true power. Glinda is a popular and ambitious figure who still seeks to understand her essence.
The two characters meet at Shiz University, where develop a deep friendship. However, after a transformative encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their paths diverge drastically, culminating in their destinies as the Good Witch of the South and the Wicked Witch of the West.
The film’s cast promises to be stellar, with the presence of Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Marissa Bode and Jeff Goldblum, among other actors.
