Celebrating 29 years of release in 2024, check out some curious facts about the ‘Toy Story’ franchise that you might not have known
In 1995, Pixar made cinema history when it released its first feature film, “Toy Story”, a film in partnership with Disney considered the pioneer of animations produced entirely by a computer.
Led byJohn Lasseterthe production that features cowboy Woody and space ranger Buzz Lightyear was nominated for three categories during the 68th edition of the Oscar, the main international cinema award: Best Soundtrack, Best Song (You’ve Got a Friend in Me) and Best Original Screenplay, marking the first time that an animation has been nominated in this category, in addition to giving the director the Oscar for Special Achievement due to his innovation with the feature.
In 2024, “Toy Story” celebrates 29 years of success and, to celebrate, RECREIO has put together a list of 5 interesting facts about the franchise that you may not yet know. Check it out!
1. Other titles
One of the most memorable phrases from the “Toy Story” films is said in the first feature of the franchise, where Woody shouts to Buzz “You… Are… A… Toy!”. What many don’t know is that, as reported by Rolling Stone Brasil, it almost became the title of the production. Furthermore, another name that was also considered is “The Cowboy and the Astronaut”.
2. Inspired by another Pixar toy
According to information on the Academy of Cinema website, the Oscars, in 1991, when Pixar and Disney signed an agreement to produce the studio’s first feature film, the project’s script was inspired by a short film released three years earlier, “ Tin Toy”, a work that accompanies a tin toy that, initially, he was afraid to play with children, however, he ends up realizing that being left unused is not cool.
3. Easter eggs in books
To this day, Pixar is recognized for always including numerous Easter eggs in its productions — and this practice has been carried out since the release of its first feature film. This is because, in “Toy Story”, the books in Andy’s room do not have the titles of real literary works, but rather of short films released by the studio — including “Tin Toy”.
4. No cowboy?
Have you ever wondered what “Toy Story” would be like without Woody as a cowboy? Today, thinking about this possibility can be very difficult — but it almost happened. This is because, according to Disney itself, in the initial production drawings, Andy’s favorite toy would actually be a ventriloquist cowboy.
5. Barbie’s participation
Barbie, the most famous doll in the world, also appears in the “Toy Story” franchise, appearing from the second film. However, the initial idea of the production was for her to participate in the plot from the beginning, being Woody’s romantic partner. Unfortunately, the plan ended up not working, as Mattel did not release the copyright for the inclusion of the doll, as they did not want her to have a defined personality. The company only agreed to her participation after seeing the success of the first film, causing her to appear in the sequel, and Ken to be included in the third feature.
