Pingu will get a new stop motion animated series

Pingu, the iconic mischievous penguin who won over audiences at the turn of the century, is about to return in a new stop motion series

For those who grew up between the 80s, 90s and 2000s, you know that the character Pingu marked many mornings and afternoons on TV Cultura. And, to the delight of those watching, the mischievous penguin and his family are about to return!

Through a partnership between Mattel, which purchased the rights from HIT Entertainment (distributor of the cartoon in the 2000s), and the animation studio Aardman, which directed the renowned “Wallace & Gromit — The Battle of Vegetables”, Pingu will gain a new stop motion series. Josh Silvermandirector of franchises at Mattel, expressed his enthusiasm for the project (via Cine Pop):

You couldn’t ask for a more perfect marriage (than between Mattel and Aardman). I just got to be with their team. We are very happy with the project. It’s going to be really, really special. Pingu continues, organically, to receive a huge amount of affection and attention. And enormous relevance.”

While Mattel toys have established successful partnerships in film and TV, such as the recent “Barbie”, Josh highlights that the company wants to maintain its originality:

Mattel seeks to replicate the success of films like ‘Barbie’, but without direct comparisons. What we’re really trying not to do is compare or contrast. Each project really stands on its own. ‘Barbie’ was an incredible partnership, obviously, with Greta, who is one of the most incredible directors on the planet, and it was such a special collaboration.”
