The song quickly reached the top of the charts and became a true phenomenon on social media, breaking genre barriers and bringing South Korean pop to a wider audience. Thanks to the impact of “Magnetic”, both K-pop fans and internet users started paying more attention to ILLIT, generating some curiosity about how and where the girl group came from.
Origin of ILLIT
Like several other groups, ILLIT was formed through a survival reality show, ‘RU NEXT?’, which was broadcast by South Korean broadcaster JTBC in the second half of 2023. The dynamics to form the new group consisted of seven stages, with the final result being a ranking of girls who would be part of the official ILLIT lineup.
At the end of the program, the talented Wonhee, Minju, Moka, Iroha and Yunah as official members of the ensemble. The training also included Youngseowho, unfortunately, ended up leaving the company before the official debut. Furthermore, the girl group’s name was explained as being an abbreviation of the phrase “I Will Be It”, which means “I will be that”, conveying the idea that they will be something special and remarkable.
