“Planes”, produced by DisneyToon Studios, is commonly confused with a Pixar animation, but it still fits the theory; find out how!
The feature film “Aviões”, produced by DisneyToon Studios, is commonly confused with a Pixar animation, due to the fact that it has the same design and premise as the “Cars” franchise. In fact, fans who believe that the stories are related are right, since, even though it is not part of the studio, “Planes” still fits into the Pixar Theory.
According to the explanation of Jon Negroniwriter and journalist who was responsible for creating the theory, the animation fits into the period in which the events of “Up – Altas Aventuras” take place.

BNL (or BuyNLarge), the company responsible for sending humans to the ship in “Wall-e”, ended up triggering a natural imbalance by removing this species from the earth and while humans settled far from the continent, machines became the species dominant, as we see in “Cars” and “Cars 2”.
Although artifacts and places built by real people can be seen, such as the Statue of Liberty and John F. Kennedy Airport, the only living beings that actually remained on earth were animals, which appear rarely during the animations.
Due to this “mass extinction”, resources have become scarce, leading us to compare some events from “Planes” to the situation. As the story takes place long after “Cars 2”, the character Skipper, protagonist Dusty’s mentor, mentions that he fought in a war in the Pacific, similar to World War II. Reinforcing this idea, the film also presents us with a map of the “World Race”, where we notice the absence of Europe, now covered by the Asian continent, which possibly “won” the conflict.
This leads us to wonder what the reason behind this war is, which could very well be justified by the lack of resources caused by the absence of humans on earth. At the beginning of Planes, we are told that corn is a sought-after fuel source for machines, which is likely because fuel resources are beginning to disappear completely.
There is more evidence to support this theory: during “Planes” and “Cars 2”, we meet characters originating from Europe, indicating that the continent existed at some point in the fictional universe. Still according Jon Negronithis narrative between the two features suggests that the combination of pollution and scarcity of resources led to endless internal conflicts between the machines, until everything was exhausted.
To better understand the idea, it is possible to find both “Aviões” and the “Cars” franchise through Disney+; remember the trailer!
