The #lipblush hashtag has over 280 million views on TikTok. Videos of reshaped, enlarged and colored mouths after lip dermopigmentation are stunning netizens. This permanent makeup technique is far from new, but its popularity has increased since the Covid-19 pandemic. “With mandatory mask wearing, this service was in high demand,” says Carla Incio, dermatologist at Gloss’up Skin & Beauty Institute in Paris. Since it wasn’t practical to wear lipstick under fabric, women could have an already made-up mouth every day without having to do anything. The pro also continues to show just as much interest in the practice after its resurgence on social media.
The phenomenon is such that the Yelp platform puts it at the top of its 2022 trends report and notes a 130% increase in searches for the term “lip blush” (1). And for good reason, this method answers a triple aesthetic demand. By redrawing them with colored ink, the lips look perfectly symmetrical, lush and pink. as if they were naturally invented all the time.
Personalized result
At the beginning of each session, the practitioner discusses with the client to confirm their “ideal” lip image and select the desired shade. “We always recommend going with a slightly darker and more vibrant color than your base color. Then everyone is free to ask for a natural or more pronounced effect,” explains Carla Incio. The expert traces the new shape with a white pencil to give a first outline, then begins the procedure. “After disinfecting the area, we apply soothing cream upstream. Then we start injecting the pigment with needles, like a tattoo, continues the dermatologist. First, we redraw the lip line a little, without darkening it too much, then we paint the inside.
In addition to saving time in the morning for lipstick addicts, lip blush offers another benefit: it “corrects lip asymmetry or ‘corrects’ lip color for those with scars or unevenness,” adds Carla Inchio.
The specialist assures that “the pain is tolerable, even if the mouth remains a sensitive area. The sensation is similar to a classic tattoo.
