The opening dinner of the NATO summit, which this year was organized by Felipe VI and Letizia of Spain, took place on Tuesday, June 28, in Madrid. The opportunity of the French president to allow himself a gesture of encouragement.
Felipe VI and Spain’s Letizia received various NATO member delegations on the occasion of a gala dinner in the Portico of the Royal Palace of Madrid. Heads of state and government, like Joe Biden accompanied by his wife Jill, all dressed in white, Pedro Sanchez, Boris Johnson, Justin Trudeau… took photos and greeted the royal couple of Spain. Emmanuel Macron was no exception and did it his way… a little old school but controlled.

After a vigorous handshake with Felipe VI, Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by his wife Brigitte Macron, advanced towards Spain’s Letizia, holding her hand and leaning towards it for the traditional hand-to-hand kiss, which is carried out according to the rules of the art, i.e. bowing and barely touching the back of the outstretched hand. The approach seemed to surprise the chief concern a little. The American president limited himself to a handshake.
After the couple and group photos, all guests were invited to leave the Salle des halberdiers to join the prelude dinner to the NATO summit. This year, the event gathers at Madrid’s Ifema Exhibition Center on Wednesday June 29 and Thursday June 30 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Spain’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
Along with 30 allied countries, four Asia-Pacific countries (Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea), four other European Union member states, as well as the heads of the European Commission and the European Council were invited.
