Animated characters that were inspired by real people

Check out the people responsible for inspiring some of the most classic characters in animation

Have you ever stopped to think about how your favorite animated characters came to be? It’s no secret that, most of the time, many of them have their appearances inspired by real-life people. Like Aladdin, who was based on the actor Tom Cruiseand the Genie, inspired by Robin Williams.

But this practice is not exclusive to Disney. Many studios have also sought inspiration from great world figures, or even ordinary people. Check out some of them!

1. Popeye

Popeye appeared in comics in 1929, created by Elzie Crisler Segar. He was inspired by Frank “Rocky” Fiegela resident of Chester, Illinois, the creator’s hometown. Like Popeye, he was also tough, liked to smoke a pipe and always participated in fights.


2. Betty Boop

Created by Max Fleischer and Grim Natwick for the animation Talkartoons, Betty was inspired by the American singer Helen Kane, who became known for imitating the style of another singer called Baby Esther Jones. The character looked so much like the actress that Helen he even sued Fleischer Studios and Paramount Pictures, the studios responsible for the production, for improper use of his image, but lost the case.


3. Rainier Wolfcastle (The Simpsons)

In The Simpsons, Rainier Wolfcaster is a famous Australian actor who is quite muscular and known for his roles in action films. Do you know who also has the same characteristics in real life? The star Arnold Schwarzeneggerwho starred in some of cinema’s most famous action films, such as “The Terminator” (1984) and “The Predator” (1987).


4. Dory (Finding Nemo)

While they were still in the process of deciding on the appearance and personality of the characters in the animated film Finding Nemo, Pixar producers, Andrew Stanton and Bob Peterson watched the presenter’s program Ellen Degeneres, when they found it extremely interesting that she could change the subject several times without ever finishing a thought.
