Which K-pop acts in history have won the VMA?

Check out all the K-pop artists who have had the opportunity to take home the coveted VMAs award

Last Wednesday, the 11th, the 2024 Video Music Awards, popularly known simply as VMAs, took place in New York, United States. The MTV awards, which have been held annually since the 1980s, are responsible for recognizing the main artists, songs and music videos released in the last year.

For K-pop fans, the night was made even more special, as it featured performances by Lisa from BLACKPINK and girl group LE SSERAFIM, as well as three awards being presented to South Korean music acts.

Since K-pop’s introduction to the VMAs, eight artists have had the chance to take home the long-awaited silver astronaut — and RECREIO will introduce you to them all. Check it out!

1. BTS

BTS is currently the South Korean act with the most wins at the MTV Video Music Awards, with 10 awards. They are:

  • 2019: Best Group and Best K-pop, with “Boy With Luv”;
  • 2020: Best Choreography, with “On”; Best Group; Best K-pop, with “On” and Best Pop, with “On”;
  • 2021: Best K-pop, with “Butter”; Group of the Year; Song of the Summer, with “Butter”;
  • 2022: Group of the Year.

2. BLACKPINK

BLACKPINK, a girl group from YG Entertainment, has already taken home four astronauts, won in the years 2020, 2022 and 2023. They are:

  • 2020: Best Summer Song, with “How You Like That”;
  • 2022: Best Metaverse Performance, with “BLACKPINK: THE VIRTUAL”, performed in the game PUBG MOBILE;
  • 2023: Best Choreography, with “Pink Venom” and Group of the Year.

3. Lisa

In addition to winning four VMAs alongside BLACKPINK, Lisa He has also taken home two awards as a soloist, both in the Best K-pop category. The first came in 2022, with his solo debut “Lalisa”, while the second was won in the 2024 edition, with the single “Rockstar”.


4. Jungkook

Like this Lisa, Jungkook He also received recognition from the MTV Video Music Awards for his career as a soloist. In 2023, BTS’s maknae was the big winner in the “Song of the Summer” category, where he took home the award thanks to his debut song “Seven”.


5. SEVENTEEN

Always present in the nominations, SEVENTEEN has already received two VMA awards. The first came in 2022, with Performance Push of the Year, with the track “Rock With You”, becoming the first k-pop artists to be nominated and win the category. The second was won yesterday, 11th, when they were elected Best Group.


6. Stray Kids

In 2023, Stray Kids received their first MTV Video Music Awards astronaut, winning the Best K-pop category, with the title track “S-Class”, receiving the award in person on the main stage.


7. TOMORROW X TOGETHER

2023 also marked the first VMA win for another beloved boy group, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, also known simply as TXT. The group took home the award for Performance Push of the Year for their song “Sugar Rush Ride.”


8. THE BLESSINGS

In this year’s edition, in addition to performing in the pre-show with the songs “1-800-hot-n-fun” and “Crazy”, LE SSERAFIM also won its first VMA astronaut. The girl group won the Best MTV Push category, with the track “Easy”.
