The discarded characters from ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’

“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was Disney’s first animated feature film, but the initial version has some differences from the final one.

“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” was Disney’s first animated feature film released in theaters. In 1937, the world met the studio’s first princess, along with her seven dwarf friends who, even after more than 80 years, are still very successful to this day.

However, according to the initial drafts of the production, instead of seven, the film would contain a group of 16 dwarves who would join Snow White during the plot. The reason behind the rejection of these characters was due to their offensive names, which pointed to issues of appearance and not equal personality in the final version.

In a set of sketches auctioned by the Bonhams auction house in New York, it is possible to get an idea of the names and physical characteristics of these discarded characters. Examples include names such as “Tubby”, “Baldy”, “Deafy” and “Shorty”. In fact, the physical appearance of the characters “Baldy” and “Deafy” is available in the image illustrating the sale on the auction house’s website; see:

It is worth remembering that, at the end of June this year, the actress Rachel Zegler confirmed through her Instagram that the live-action of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” has already finished filming. The actress, who will play the protagonist, promises that the film will be a modernized version of the 1937 classic, which generated some doubts and questions from internet users.

Among the public’s disapprovals was the choice to represent the dwarves through computer graphics, known as CGI, and not with real actors. This decision came after criticism from the actor Peter Dinklagefrom “Games Of Thrones”, who has dwarfism, and accused the studios of reinforcing the stereotype of people with dwarfism. In an interview with the WTF Podcast, he said:

They’re proud to have cast a Latina as Snow White, but they’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what they’re doing there. It doesn’t make sense to me. You’re making progress in one way, but you’re still making a backwards story about seven dwarves living in a cave together.”
