Find out what the meaning behind the name ‘BT21’ is, which was established during the creation process after a comment from Suga
BT21, a collection of characters inspired by the seven members of BTS, first appeared in 2017 as virtual stickers in partnership with the messaging app Line, one of the most popular in South Korea. Since then, the characters have been part of the Line Friends Creators project, which has expanded the brand to include animations, games and a wide variety of physical products, with a highlight being the recent collection launched in collaboration with McDonald’s.
Each of the characters — Tata, Mang, Chimmy, RJ, Koya, Cooky, Shooky, and Van — were created with characteristics that reflect the personalities of the BTS members and ARMY (the group’s fandom), as well as receiving input from each member for their own character design. However, the name ‘BT21’ also has a special meaning, which was established after a comment from Sucks.
The meaning of BT21
At the time of its release, the idol suggested that the characters represent both BTS and the 21st century, to ensure they remain relevant for the next 100 years. The story also has a universal feel, as it follows a group of aspiring idols guided by the alien Tata (a character created by V), who left his home planet with Van (the character representing ARMY) to visit Earth, where he was impressed by BTS’s popularity.
