Why BTS’s Suga Didn’t Like Going to International Award Shows

In an interview with Weverse Magazine in 2021, Suga revealed that he didn’t like going to international award shows; find out why!

While it’s not common to see K-pop artists at international awards shows, some groups have stood out due to the global success they’ve achieved over the years. One notable example is BTS, who frequently top international charts and have made notable appearances at American ceremonies such as the Billboard Music Awards and the Grammy Awards.

However, one of the boy group’s members has already revealed that he didn’t like attending American award shows in the past. In an interview with Weverse Magazine in 2021, Sucks revealed that he felt “intimidated by the biggest music market in the world”:

What has changed in my view since the first time I went to an American music awards ceremony is that the first time I was really scared of the biggest music market in the world. But when I look back now, I don’t think I had any reason to feel so intimidated. To be honest, it’s only now that I’ve started to enjoy awards ceremonies. I used to be incapable of doing it.”

Furthermore, Sucks He also expressed his views on the pressure that the K-pop industry puts on idols, which could possibly be a factor in why artists, especially newcomers, feel so intimidated after gaining public attention. When asked about this, he said that the system should impose more changes, putting the health of idols first:

The way artists promote themselves is very difficult. As soon as their promotions begin, they appear on one music show a day and feel very tired, and there are many cases where this accumulates and causes injuries. And despite this, it is not as if they are paid to do music shows. And so, although they are quite active, there are no tangible results, and so they will become discouraged (…) The promotion systems for music shows in South Korea are known to be exhausting, with idols preparing from dawn with hair and makeup and participating in rehearsals all day. However, music shows do not operate on a paid-for-performance system, as it is an opportunity that many artists, especially newcomers, want to have their names known to the general public.”

Sucks reveals that he is grateful to his record label, Big Hit Music, for listening to artists and not treating them just as a product of the industry:

The great thing about the label I’m working for is that they listen to the artists’ opinions. I think both we and the label know to some extent what types of activities would be best from a commercial standpoint (…) But I’ve heard that there have been times where a label would just say, ‘Do it,’ without any explanation to the artist, or ‘Why are you talking so much?’ I think that’s the biggest problem that’s destroying the industry. If you just see the artist as a product, how can they do anything creative?”
