The proof of love and the guarantee of a virtuous relationship, the trust we place, can leave deep wounds when betrayed. That’s why we say it’s won, because we have a lot to lose. “Sadness, anger, feelings of abandonment… the psychological weight of betrayal is sometimes heavy and can plunge someone into everyday discomfort,” explains social psychologist and researcher Professor Fanny Lalotte at the University of Basel. In extreme cases, feeling manipulated, we fall victim to what psychotherapy calls “betrayal trauma.” Then we can completely change our relationships with others to the point of becoming paranoid and isolated.”
