What is the meaning of the Smeraldo flower for BTS?

Featured in Jimin’s latest album, the Smeraldo flower has been part of BTS’s concept for some time now. Discover its meaning!

Last Friday, 19th, Jiminmember of BTS, made his latest solo comeback with the album “MUSE”, which arrived accompanied by a beautiful music video for the title track “Who”. Watch it!

In addition to the title track, the album features six more songs, two of which feature very special guest appearances: “Slow Dance”, which features the voice of the American singer Sofia Carsonand “Smeraldo Garden Marching Band”, featuring South Korean rapper Crazy.

Since the album’s tracklist was released in late June, ARMYs have been especially excited about the song in partnership with Crazy for showing the return of a concept addressed by BTS for a long time: the Smeraldo flower, an important element in the symbolism of the Bangtan Universe.

But what does the Smeraldo flower mean to BTS?

The concept related to the Smeraldo flower is present in the eras “Love Yourself”, “Hwa Yong Yeon Hwa” (formed by the albums “The Most Beautiful Moment in Life Part 1, 2, and Young Forever”), and “Wings”, however, to understand everything, it is necessary to know an old Italian legend.

Smeraldo is actually a fictional plant, which is part of a myth that takes place in Cittá Di Smeraldo, located in northern Italy, where its name means “Non potevo dire la verità”, that is, “The truth that was not told”, in Portuguese, and “The Truth Untold” in English, the same name as one of the tracks on the album “Love Yourself: Tear”, by BTS.

Set in the medieval era around the 15th and 16th centuries, the legend tells the story of a man, the illegitimate son of the Duke of Florence who, due to his grotesque appearance, lived isolated from the world in a castle, without letting anyone get close, and having only the flowers in his garden as his only source of happiness.

One day, his solitude is interrupted when a girl in ragged clothes appears in his garden and steals some of his flowers. However, instead of chasing her away as he always did with everyone who approached him, even though he was furious, he just lets her finish what she was doing, watching her from afar.

As a result, the woman returns to her garden every night, generating curiosity and a certain affection for her in the man. Intrigued, he decides to follow her to the village, disguised with a cloak and mask to hide his true appearance, where he discovers that the girl led a miserable life, and picked her flowers to sell and raise money to support herself.

Touched by the situation, he decides to create the most beautiful flower of all so that she can harvest it and raise even more money: the Smeraldo. However, when he finishes creating the plant, he ends up being surprised when he realizes that the woman never visits his garden again. Worried, he decides to look for her in the village, where he discovers that she died due to her poverty.

In the end, the moral of the story ends up being the same one presented by BTS in the “Love Yourself”, “Hwa Yong Yeon Hwa” and “Wings” eras: love yourself and always chase your desires. In the new song by Jimin“Smeraldo Garden Marching Band”, the concept is also present, with the idol presenting the story of a person in love who will not keep his feelings to himself, and will share them with his loved one, running after his love.
