‘One Piece’ manga sketches reveal first looks at characters and names that are different from those seen in the pages and on-screen adaptations
Released in July 1997, the “One Piece” manga was created by Eiichiro Oda, which to this day keeps several behind-the-scenes details of its creation a secret. One of them came to light with the Blu-Ray version of the anime ‘Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation’ released in Japan, which arrived accompanied by sketches of some characters made more than 30 years ago by the mangaka.
It turns out that the ‘Monsters: 103 Mercies Dragon Damnation’ box set was sold with a booklet called Katai Shinroku that contains interviews with Oda and some prototypes of ‘One Piece’, where it is possible to notice that the characters had other names, after all, Luffy would be called Monkey D.Pao, while the samurai Ryuma and the knight Romeo gave rise to Zoro and Sanji. More about ‘One Piece’
The manga of Oda follows the pirates known as the Straw Hat Pirates, who sail the seas in search of fame, power and riches contained in the largest and most sought-after treasure in the world: the One Piece, left by the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger.
In 1999, the story was adapted for TV in the form of an anime produced by Toei Animation, and was also adapted into several animated films, as well as video games, and of course, a live-action series on Netflix, which currently has its second season in production.
