With the fourth film in the original franchise in theaters, find out if ‘Despicable Me’ could get a new sequel
In theaters for exactly one week, ‘Despicable Me 4’ follows Gru on a mission to protect his family when an old acquaintance returns seeking revenge. At the same time, the former villain has to raise a newborn baby: his son, Gru Jr., the result of his relationship with Lucy, who despite being sweet with his mother, loves to test his father’s patience; watch the trailer!
Even though the film has only recently premiered, it is possible that a new sequel will be in the works at some point in the future, as revealed by the franchise’s director and Minions voice actor, Chris Renaudin an interview given to Variety.
If we create a good story and it looks like we can cover some new territory, then it certainly is possible.”
If the fifth film is released, fans can be sure of one thing: Margo, Agnes and Edith will not grow up! It turns out that Renaud said that he was inspired by ‘The Simpsons’, so it won’t be possible to follow the girls going through teenage problems – and not just them, with the arrival of Gru Jr., it’s likely that all future plots will always feature him as a baby, since none of them will age with the arrival of new titles.
“It’s funny, that subject comes up a lot. I don’t think audiences care. First of all, to your point, we could do a story about Margo being 18 and going to college… But we took the ‘Simpsons’ approach where nobody ages. They’re frozen in time. I’ve seen the movie with an audience a few times, and I don’t feel like people are coming forward and seeing that as a problem, asking, ‘Why didn’t Margo grow up?’” the director said in a statement to Deadline.
More about ‘Despicable Me’
From Universal Studios and Illumination, the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise began in 2010 featuring Gru as a supervillain whose desire was to commit the greatest crime of the century, and to do so, he wanted to steal the moon. However, what he didn’t expect was that including Margo, Agnes and Edith in the plan would lead him to a great dilemma, after all, he would have to decide between completing his mission or becoming the father figure of the three girls who wanted him as a father.
The film became a success, grossing over $500 million at the box office worldwide, leading to the title gaining three more sequels and two spin-offs featuring Gru’s yellow helpers as the protagonists: Minions (2015) and ‘Minions 2: The Rise of Gru’ (2022), as well as short films.
