In a recent interview, Jin says that the support of his teammates was fundamental to winning an important title in the army.
While still doing his compulsory military service, JinBTS’s 19-year-old left fans shocked after being promoted to the rank of Elite Class Warrior just four months after beginning his days in the South Korean military. The title is only awarded to soldiers who display exemplary conduct, as well as physical fitness and mental resilience, characteristics that, according to Jinwere very well crafted and developed thanks to their personal efforts.
In a recent interview with Weverse Magazine, the idol revealed that he practiced his unit’s specific skills to help new recruits, as well as working hard to increase his resilience on his own:
It varies from unit to unit, but in ours we had the opportunity to practice using firearms whenever new recruits came in. So I started shooting and would always do exercises like sit-ups or push-ups on my own, and I got stronger and stronger. We had to run with the trainees, and the assistant sergeants couldn’t fall behind, so I forced myself to keep running until I got better.
But, in addition to his own efforts, he also had the help and encouragement of his teammates, which also helped the idol become an Elite Warrior. Jin comments that he received several tips on nutrition, even building a support network with older soldiers:
When I was working on this title, all my senior soldiers came to me and said, ‘Don’t eat dinner or your stomach will turn and you won’t be able to run tomorrow.’ We would only eat a little bit, and they said, ‘No. Or, if you have to, limit yourself to one spoonful.’ Then the next morning they said, ‘Today is the big day. Don’t drink any more water.’ So I said, ‘Just one sip!’ And they said, ‘Just one sip then, and no more.’
He shared that on another occasion, his superiors ensured that he did not feel pain in his legs while running, using a technique in which they “absolutely covered him in icy hot spray.”
His main goal while serving in the military was to do the same for his juniors, striving to be a role model they could trust and look up to.
