Culture shock. these 4 habits that will annoy Americans while vacationing in Europe this summer

Under the hashtag #Eurosummer, Americans talk about their frustrations in Europe (here, a mother and daughter walk in Nice).

We list four culture shocks that upset Americans on European getaways. And that will most likely be repeated during the Olympic Games in Paris.

History has been repeating itself for three years. The summer season has barely started and thousands of videos are already appearing on TikTok under the #Eurosummer hashtag. Europe and summer (summer), this trend emerged as a result of the epidemic in the United States. After months of detention, required America’s Generation Z then proceeds to treat itself to a “little” month in Europe, live it up with a dolce vita spritz and a yacht, then make the rest of the world the envy of it by posting a well-crafted video on social media. . But once there, it doesn’t take much for these young idealists to become disillusioned. The cobbled streets, the lack of air conditioning or even the lack of free public toilets… Our traditions and lifestyle are enough to annoy more than one American cousin. Decoding:

To walk

Before going on vacation, some people read guides and read blogs. Others carefully note recommendations from friends. However, the Americans’ special preparation should be noted. Just type in “Eurosummer outing” on TikTok to find out that some people are indulging in a specific European sports routine before the big departure. “I’m training for my European summer by walking 25,000 steps a day for a month before I leave,” shared @kennedidarefitness. These exercises, enough to amuse more than one European, are taken with the utmost seriousness across the Atlantic. Accustomed to traveling in their large SUVs, more than one of them have resisted TikTok in our small historic towns or even on cobbled streets too inconvenient for wheeled suitcases.

Last summer, a user named @iamiamlex took to TikTok to point out this lack of convenience, completely deconstructing the Amalfi Coast, one of social media’s most popular destinations. “All the influencers who recommended the Amalfi Coast deserve to go to jail,” the tourist exaggerates. “Because if they show you the magnificent bay and the charming little towns, they don’t mention that it’s almost impossible to get there in the first place. You have to fly to Naples, then take a train from Naples to Sorrento, then a stop in 32°C by ferry. When you finally arrive, you have to climb 160 degrees with all your luggage to reach the highest point, where there are the most beautiful hotels and the most beautiful views,” complains the young American woman. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine that behind just a few seconds of video capturing the overwhelming blue of the coast, you’d have to use your feet to enjoy it.

Lack of water and ice

As incredible as it is, it is still true. For several weeks, Americans have been saying that Europeans don’t drink water. A new conspiracy theory born on TikTok under the hashtag “Drinking water in Europe” has tourists protesting our dehydration rituals. “Hello, worried American in Europe. Where is the water?? Why don’t we drink water here? I’m thirsty,” says the Tiktok tourist. It is enough to immediately provoke a reaction from French users. “Do you know the taps,” replies one. “In France, it is forbidden to use water unless you have a permit. Otherwise it’s beer or pastis, depending on the region, or coffee. It’s famous,” quipped another.

It must be said that on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, we find water fountains everywhere, from schools to gyms, including shopping malls. Not forgetting the Stanley Cups, these XXL water bottles that the new generation is getting their hands on and are emerging as the latest fashion accessory to absolutely buy. And when they (finally) manage to get drinking water, there is criticism about its temperature. Indeed, in US restaurants it is customary to drink cold water with ice cubes occupying more than half of the glass, which is not customary in Europe. Where we know that drinking too cold is one of the common mistakes to avoid when you want to cool off.

Public toilets, but for a fee

Another lack of amenities that surprises and angers American tourists. Public toilets. “I’m ready to go home because paying to go to the bathroom every time is horrible,” the American tourist said on the TikTok social network. It must be said that the toilets “at home” are free and everywhere. Some tourists, however, have discovered the automatic toilets, these large gray blocks located in the four corners of Paris. While some cite their lack of hygiene, others applaud the ingenuity of automatic washing machines and even go so far as to provide manuals on how to use them.

Too long service life in the food industry

Fast life vs sweet life. While Americans are happy to discover French, Italian or even Portuguese gastronomy, many of them are annoyed by excessively long wait times in restaurants. Indeed, restaurants in the US operate on a dual-service basis, which means that when the meal has barely been eaten, the bill is already waiting to be paid to welcome new customers. In Europe we like to take our time. It’s enough to unsettle some tourists who are surprised by this “relaxed” service. Not to mention restaurant hours that open too late for American tastes. Very bad.
