“Inside Out 2”, the sequel to the 2015 film, has been a huge success among audiences and critics alike. The new plot explores Riley’s journey through pre-adolescence, as her primary emotions – Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear and Anger – gain new companions on the control panel of her mind, where together they will need to face the challenges and changes of growing up.
Among the assumptions surrounding the “Pixar Theory”, which consists of stating that all of the company’s films are part of the same universe, one of the most recent is that of Riley’s true origin. Some fans believe that the soul of the protagonist of Inside Out is, in fact, Soul 22, from the film “Soul”.
The fact that both characters love pizza and came from films directed by the same director (Pete Docter) makes the theory all the more meaningful. In addition, Riley’s birthday is supposedly on January 22, another topic that coincides with the name of the protagonist of “Soul.”
Joy, one of Riley’s primary emotions, is also a key point in the theory, as Soul 22 says she delayed returning to Earth because she was afraid of not being happy. In both films, Riley is guided primarily by Joy before making any decisions, which “fulfills” one of 22’s greatest wishes; check out the final scene of Soul where the character returns to Earth:
Although all aspects are just assumptions, this theory is the one that makes the most sense. Comparisons with other Pixar characters have also been made, such as Mei Lee, the protagonist of “Red” or Ellie, from “Up”, who could also be possible hosts for Soul 22 after it falls to Earth.
