Have you ever wondered where the Minions, famous characters from the ‘Despicable Me’ franchise, come from? Find out how they came to be!
The resounding success of the “Despicable Me” franchise is mainly due to the Minions, the little yellow creatures that help the protagonist and supervillain Gru achieve his goals. They always appear stealing the scene in every film with their comical personality, which even led to them getting their own story in 2015.
However, one topic that is easy for viewers to forget is the true origin of the Minions in the Despicable Me universe. Contrary to what the first film suggests, Gru was not the one responsible for creating them in his laboratory. In fact, the history of these characters is much more complex, as they have existed since the beginning of civilization.
As portrayed in the 2015 film, the Minions have evolved to be driven by a single common purpose: to serve the world’s most evil people and villains. Throughout the story, we see them fulfilling their primary goals, but they also end up putting their masters’ lives at risk, even if innocently.
From crushing a Pharaoh with a pyramid to throwing a dinosaur into a volcano, the Minions fail to anticipate disastrous situations, as is also shown in “Despicable Me”. On Dracula’s birthday, for example, they decided to prepare a birthday cake for the vampire, but ended up exposing it to the sun by accident. Check it out!
After many incidents ending in the same way, the Minions began to live in an isolated cave, entering a kind of hibernation due to lack of motivation and the absence of someone to guide them. One day, tired of waiting, the trio Kevin, Stuart and Bob — who are the Minions who stand out during the “Despicable Me” franchise — set out on a journey to find a new master to serve.
In the mid-1960s, they meet the supervillain Scarlet Overkill, the film’s main antagonist and their master before eventually joining Gru in the future.

There is no explanation as to why the franchise reworked the Minions’ original story. However, one possible explanation is that the creators did not expect the characters to be such a huge success with the public, which gave the studio much more creative freedom.
In the fourth “Despicable Me” film, which hits theaters next Thursday, July 4, more variations of Minions will be introduced, making it even clearer that Illumination wants to continue extending the story of these iconic characters; check out the dubbed trailer!
