Riley’s Personality Islands are the areas where the foundational memories that helped shape who she is are; Find out what they are!
Just like in “Inside Out”, we also have unique traits and tastes that define our uniqueness. Through hobbies and the relationships we build, we are able to create special and memorable memories that are stored in the subconscious of our brain. These memories not only help us value our most important tastes and connections, but also help us prioritize our most meaningful experiences.
To Riley’s emotions, this phenomenon is known as “Personality Islands”, which are the areas where all the fundamental memories that helped shape who she is are stored. In the first film, we are introduced to just five of these islands, but in the sequel, three more come to the fore. Find out more about them all in the text below!
Family Island
Family Island is the center of all the other islands. It was one of the first to be created in Riley’s mind based on memories related to happy moments with her parents, like when they baked cookies together or while playing in the Minnesota house. During the first film, we see Riley’s feelings fluctuate due to moving to San Francisco, but, in the end, the Island expands, presenting elements of the new city, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, indicating that Riley has finally accepted his new home.
Island of Honesty
Honesty Island was also created during Riley’s childhood, and represents her inclination towards truth and integrity. In “Inside Out”, after breaking a plate with a hammer, Riley recognizes the mistake and admits it to her parents. However, in “Inside Out 2”, this Island is also destroyed and restored again, as Riley steals money from her mother to try to return to Minnesota; remember the scenes:
Hockey Island
The main hobby that defines Riley’s personality is Hockey. While she was still a child, during a match with her family, she accidentally scored her first goal, thus forming a new memory, which led to the creation of Hockey Island. Throughout both films, it becomes clear that Riley has a genuine passion for the sport, which has also served as the foundation for her to build her most meaningful friendships.
Friendship Island
Friendship Island represents all of Riley’s friendships. It was created from the memories she made with Meg, her best friend while still living in Minnesota. In the second film, Bree and Grace take on this role during the protagonist’s pre-adolescence, being her classmates and teammates on the hockey team.

Bobeira Island
All the funny situations that Riley experienced, including inside jokes with his family, are stored on Silly Island. It was formed based on a memory where she ran around the house running away from her father after taking a shower, and reflects all the other situations in which the girl acted guided by humor.

Tragic Vampire Romance Island
In “Inside Out 2”, Riley proves that no experience is individual, as she also discovers her interest in things that are very common among pre-teens her age. The Island of Tragic Vampire Romance reflects her taste for literature starring vampires, and it is obvious that this may include clear references to Twilight!

Boy Band Island
Another classic taste that we nurtured during pre-adolescence is our addiction to boy bands. Whether through pop, rock, indie or K-pop, we always end up getting attached to some group, and with Riley this also happens in “Inside Out 2”. Some people hope this is just a phase, but Boy Band Island remains present and active in Riley’s mind until the end of the film.

Fashion Island
Closing the trio of new Islands that will appear in “Inside Out 2”, we have Fashion Island, better known as Disgusting’s favorite. Although it is not explicitly mentioned in the story whether this Island encompasses anything other than clothes, we know that it represents all of Riley’s ideas for acceptance by society.
