English is the most popular foreign language among Ukrainians, spoken by 40% of the country’s residents.

The Verkhovna Rada proposes to approve a state program to promote the study of English. Within its limits, it is proposed to reimburse theaters for the costs of screening English films if tickets for such films do not sell well. It was reported on Monday, June 3, by the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy.

The parliamentary committee has already supported the corresponding amendment to the bill on the use of the English language in Ukraine, submitted by President Vladimir Zelensky in 2023.

The approved amendment states that for the release of foreign films in English under specified conditions, the payment of the corresponding costs will be made voluntarily. But subject to certain requirements:

  • each hall must hold at least eight screenings of English films in a month;

  • at least two public screenings must take place during the week at any time, on weekends and/or weekdays, with screenings starting after 6 pm

It is known that in November 2023, the Verkhovna Rada supported bill No. 9432 on the use of the English language in Ukraine.

It was previously reported that the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy is developing a plan for the introduction of English in cinemas, taking into account the interests of viewers and the cinema business.

President Vladimir Zelensky registered in the Verkhovna Rada a bill on the use of the English language in Ukraine. It provides for the official consolidation of the status of the English language as one of the languages of international communication in Ukraine.
