This week, Teen Vogue magazine named the 21 best girl groups of all time, including some big names in K-pop. Find it out!
For approximately a century, female musical groups have put a lot of complexity into lyrics that resonate with the experiences of women in adolescence and, often, adulthood. Even as time passes, these emotions remain the same, which is perhaps why so many female groups and artists continue to resonate so strongly to this day.
Based on this idea, Teen Vogue magazine published last Monday, the 20th, a list revealing the best 21 girl groups of all time. In the list, it is possible to find groups of various styles, including K-Pop, which was mentioned through six girl groups, namely:
TWICE
TWICE was formed through the survival program “Sixteen” in 2015 by JYP Entertainment, and is made up of nine members: Naeyeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyeoung It is Tzuyu. His last comeback took place in February 2024, with the mini-album “With YOU-th”. Check out the video for the title track “ONE SPARK”!
2NE1
Legendary girl group 2NE1 was formed by YG Entertainment in May 2009, debuting with the track “Fire”. Composed by CL, Dara, Minzy It is Park Bom, the group had its disbandment announced in November 2016, by decision of the company. The girl group’s last release was made in January 2017, with the farewell track “Goodbye”. Watch the clip!
BLACKPINK
Created in 2016 by YG Entertainment, BLACKPINK is composed of Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé It is Lisa. The girl group’s most recent comeback took place in September 2022, with the track “SHUT DOWN”, the title track from the group’s second full-album, “BORN PINK”. Check out the MV!
Red Velvet
Red Velvet debuted in 2014 through SM Entertainment with the song “Happiness”, with just four members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy It is Joy. Yeri was added to the group the following year, during the release of the first mini-album “Ice Cream Cake”.
The group’s most recent comeback took place in November 2023, with the third full-album “Chill Kill”. Check out the title track clip!
Girls’ Generation
Formed in 2007 by SM Entertainment, Girls’ Generation is considered one of the most important girl groups in K-pop, being a reference for countless artists to this day. Currently, the group is made up of eight members: Taeyeon, Tiffany Young, Sunny, Yuri, Hyoyeon, Sooyoung, Yoona It is Seohyun.
SNSD’s latest release is August 2022 with the full-album “FOREVER 1”, in celebration of their 15th anniversary of debut. Watch!
WonderGirls
Wonder Girls debuted through JYP Entertainment in February 2007. Their initial lineup consisted of five members, who were Sunye, Yeeun, Hyuna, Sunmi It is Sohee. Although, Hyuna left the group in the same year as their debut, with the final line-up consisting only of the other four.
The group officially ended its activities on January 26, 2017, and on February 10 of the same year, they released their latest single, titled “Draw Me”, which served as a celebration of their 10th anniversary. Listen to the song!
