While some people are fans of frequent or even daily shampooing, should they be concerned about possible early hair loss? The experts answer the question.
When it comes to hair care, some myths die hard. This is one of them. Does washing too often cause hair loss? Caroline Bufalini, Klorane Studio Hairstylist, and Denise Guillouet, Care Test Manager at L’Oréal’s Professional Products Division, agree: “No.” According to experts, hair loss can be explained by stress, pregnancy, menstrual cycle or even lifestyle. Fortunately, no reputable store-bought shampoo will cause premature balding.

Bad hair styling habits
On the other hand, some hairstyles contribute to this early hair loss. It’s the case of the ‘groomed’ bun (French for ‘smooth and shiny’) which has gone viral on social media after influencers Hailey Bieber and Sofia Richie made it their hairstyle. This bun is distinguished by the fact that the hair is very stretched and well laid. And that’s the problem. “When you let your hair down, it has a natural fall and movement, which allows you to breathe better. Any gesture that contradicts the grain of this nature should not be exaggerated,” first warns hairdresser Hovik Etoyan, founder of his salon of the same name in Paris. “In general, if you tie them too often and too tightly, you’ll distort this natural drop, and that will have consequences,” he adds. Hence the concern of professionals about the “elegant bun” technique, which especially involves many twists and intense hair pulling. “We pull them to make them smooth, then we tie them. therefore, we create a double stress on both the head and the lengths. Over time, these actions will not only cause pain to the scalp and prevent it from breathing, but also increase hair loss. If you do it for two days, it can become dangerous,” warns the expert, adding that “it’s worse if your scalp is sensitive or if your hair is dyed.”

Another practice that is absolutely forbidden when creating an “elegant bun” is styling on wet hair. “When pulled while wet, the hair may appear softer and stretchier, but when it dries, it will return to its original shape and become even longer, therefore taking more abuse,” explains Hovig. Etoyan. And most importantly, if you use root-sticking and fixing agents, such as gel or varnish, which are used to create this famous “clean and smooth” effect, “shampoo and conditioner”, warns the expert. Do not go to sleep without removing the material.’
