The idea is supported by Polynesian mythology, where there is the belief that souls go to the world of the dead through portals located on islands, and one of these entrances is in Kahakaloa, on the island of Maui, as explained by Martina Buckovádeputy director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Slovak Academy of Sciences, in an article.

More than that, the theory gains strength based on two details. The first shows that, after sinking, Moana no longer interacts with any person, and all her contacts are limited to beings that are not normally seen by human eyes, such as gods, monsters and spirits.

The second observation points to the princess’s tireless disposition. This is because Moana remains sailing for days across the sea in order to find Te Fiti, a journey that would be difficult for ordinary humans, as tiredness would soon appear, but the character only shows discomfort at a single moment during the journey, when she enters a cave, which indicates that she was already traveling outside her body.

Still, the idea states that she can return to life. This happens at the end of the film, when Te Fiti’s heart is delivered, as a line from Maui indicates that not only her, but everyone on the trip, had died, as she notices that after the concert on Moana’s vessel, even the rooster The princess’s pet, HeiHei, was alive.

In this way, Moana was ready to interact with humans again, so when she returned to the island, she was welcomed by her family and the other villagers with hugs and celebrations.
