Last Saturday, Brazil received the sad news of the death of Ziraldo, one of the biggest names in Brazilian literature and father of Menino Maluquinho, aged 91. According to his family, the cartoonist died at home, in Rio de Janeiro, while sleeping, of natural causes.
The wake open to the public took place on Sunday, 7th, at MAM — Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. The burial was held privately for family and close friends at the São João Batista Cemetery, in Botafogo.
After the news of his death was released, Mauricio de Sousafather of “Turma da Mônica” and one of the cartoonist’s great friends, spoke out on social media, lamenting the loss of his “brother”, as he himself stated.
What a sadness! I have no words. I lost more than a great friend. I lost a brother. Of letters, of lines and of life! But he will always be in my heart. The comic book duo have been friends for decades, and have become two of the biggest names in Brazilian children’s literature. During the 2018 Book Biennial, the two even revealed that Mauricio was invited to write some Pererê comic strips, but that the content ended up being lost.
In the same year, they launched the first partnership between their most famous characters, “MMM — Mônica and Menino Maluquinho na Montanha Mágica”. In 2019, they collaborated again on “Mônica e o Menino Maluquinho Perdidos no Espaço”.
