The multidisciplinary artist, rapper and actor at the helm of two productions likes to step out of his comfort zone. On Arte, she was up against Margot Bancilhon CarRecognized as the best French series in Séries Mania 2024.
Madame Figaro. – My news?
Joey Starr. – Car, an atypical series that combines trade unionism, Marxism, kung fu and cycling. The perfect blend of entertainment and social reflection. There is little fiction of this kind in France. I couldn’t pass it up, especially with Thomas Bidegein on the script.
My character?
A former drug addict who quotes Karl Marx to get out of any situation. He leads a workers’ revolt on heroin (played by Margot Bancilhon, editor’s note) in the endangered plant.

What do I share with him?
I also like to express myself with punch lines. It’s my way of taking a step back. Moreover, the series takes place in the 1990s, in a working-class district. Not so far from where I grew up. And in my youth, I also did cycling.
Is the first one good?
I don’t think so. First of all, we need to get to know each other, to understand with the director so that I can give my best.
The best partner.
It’s hard to compete with Jean-Pierre Mariel, who I starred with Max: (2012). Unique comedy. I was blown away by Margot Bancilhon, in Car. Not only is he in every frame, but he is also extremely reliable as a former special forces.
My other series?
Season 2 substitute, on TF1, at the beginning of May. I like this French teacher who swims against the tide. He looks like me, I think.
My last favorite movie?
tender chicken With Annie Girardot and Philippe Noiret. Under the guise of comedy, Philippe de Broca was still talking about the female commissioner in the 1970s, a strong symbol in a film full of nonsense.
My state of mind at the moment?
I am very proud to have signed two productions. This little music that nobody listens toa play written and performed by Clarice Fontaine every Friday at the Théâtre Maturin in Paris and black label co-director with Dominique Bobet. It’s a literary-musical show where I read texts about anti-racism. After a few dates in the regions, we will perform at the beginning of the academic year in Paris at the Halle de la Villette.
I’d rather talk about what I do than who I am
Joey Starr
Are you talking about me being promoted, out?
I hate it. I’d rather talk about what I do than who I am.
Wooden tongue or very sharp?
It’s all about timing. The sooner it is, the more trouble I have.
A topic that makes me miserable at my hinges.
I used to be convicted of violence, and Clarice Fontaine’s play is about violence against women. Some use it to create noise. This makes for a poor reading of the show. I also believe that everyone has the right to redemption. I was in construction when I committed these acts, and I am still, but I am trying to repent. When Clarisse approached me, I saw an opportunity to face my story.
We need to “smell” each other with the director first, so that I can give my best
Joey Starr
A question that I am afraid of.
“Your favorite color”, something like that. Because I change my mind every day and I’m past the age of interviews like this.
I lie in interviews.
No, I smoke.
Last time I was proud of myself?
When I was a director and when I was creating with my production company Tarwaa. I produce and write social documentaries, specifically about the use of chlordecone, a pesticide on banana plantations. I also participate in inclusive conferences…

What am I going to do after this interview?
Go back to sleep. I finished it late yesterday, I’m still picking up the crumbs.
