In his new comic, The idolatersJoan Sfar tells about her childhood, the loss of her mother. “I tried to question the construction of a female character in a boy who lost his mother before he was 4 years old.” But he, who almost did not take away the memories of the one who gave him life, clarifies. “Don’t confuse absence with emptiness. What I experienced was a void, but I filled it with images.” He is built with a very special father figure. “My dad was a playboy, he was very popular and I grew up with that. It is very difficult to form an image, an identity on the face of such a man.”
Despite this, he appreciates an “extremely happy” childhood. Even today, happiness seems to shake his life. “I love being French, I love being in Paris, I love being a designer, I love my family and even my dog, so I’m very lucky.” Joanne Sfar believes that painting “saves her from everything,” particularly the harsh news stories that plague Israel. And strives to maintain hope. “The voices of peace are always there. We simply do not hear them under the fire of cannons. People who want to talk to each other are always there.”
