Is Anne Hathaway’s new film inspired by One Direction fanfic?

The plot follows the story of Solène Marchand (Anne Hathaway), a 40-year-old gallerist and solo mother who, after accompanying her 16-year-old daughter Izzy (Ella Rubin), to the Coachella music festival, ends up getting involved with Hayes Campbell (Nicholas Galitzine), member of the most popular boyband of the moment, August Moon, and 16 years younger.

With the release of the preview, the film soon became one of the most talked about topics on social media, after fans recalled that, originally, the plot was a fanfic inspired by the members of One Direction, where the main character was Harry Styles.

Due to its success, the fanfiction ended up being adapted into a book with the same title, written by Robinne Lee, where the characters needed to receive new names due to image rights. The film, however, is based entirely on the events presented in the book released last year.

Repercussion

After the arrival of the trailer, many One Direction fans realized that, despite the adaptation, the film has numerous clear references to the group, such as the fact that August Moon, the fictional boy band presented in the story, also has five members, in addition to some physical characteristics of the character Nicholas Galitzine which are extremely similar to the Harry Styles.

In an interview with BuzzFeed UK, Nicholas commented on Harry be the inspiration for his character, where he said:

“We tried to create a character that felt, you know, related to Harry, in the sense that he’s a younger man dating older women. It was important to create someone who felt fresh and original and not a shoddy representation of that person.”
