TikTok is being forced to continue removing music from the platform due to a royalty dispute with Universal Music Group (UMG).
TikTok has begun removing more music from its platform as part of its ongoing conflict with Universal Music Group (UMG) over royalties. The BBC reported it.
The app has already removed songs from artists signed to the label, but now it’s being forced to do the same to creators.
This means that songs by artists such as Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish, The Weeknd and Adele, who co-wrote them with artists signed to Universal, will also disappear from the app.
It is understood that Universal’s music was licensed to TikTok until earlier this year, but they stopped the license after they disagreed on how much the app should pay artists.
As a result, the label’s catalog of nearly three million songs was removed from TikTok in early February.
The catalog’s publishing deal expires at the end of the week, meaning another four million songs will be removed from the platform.
In turn, TikTok published an open letter in which they wrote: “It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their own greed above the interests of their artists and songwriters. Despite the false narrative and Universal’s rhetoric, the fact remains that they have decided to withdraw their strong support to a platform with more than a billion users that serves as a free tool to promote and discover their talents.”
It was earlier reported that TikTok summed up the year and revealed the most popular videos that captivated and delighted millions of users.
