“Historical day”. wave of emotions after the inclusion of abortion in the Constitution

Senator Melanie Vogel was applauded by dozens of people after the adoption of the text on Wednesday, February 28. An evening in which many feminist activists expressed their deepest emotions.

“Did you cry too?” That’s the question one feminist activist asked another this Wednesday, February 28, at the Luxembourg Palace. During the evening, the senators voted in favor of including abortion in the Constitution. All under the same conditions as the National Assembly. Emmanuel Macron has since invited parliamentarians who will attend the Congress in Versailles on March 4 to vote on the text once more.

The adoption of the latter by the Senate raised a wave of emotions among feminist activists. Especially with Melanie Vogel, an environmentalist senator and passionate defender of this text. Two years ago, it actually introduced a bill that would have included abortion in the Constitution, but was rejected by the senatorial majority of the right and the center. Therefore, he welcomed the decision of the Senate with special emotion.

“Historical” day

After receiving a standing ovation from dozens of people as he left the hall, the senator shed a few tears before hugging his colleague. Feminist activists also welcomed this news with shouts of joy. “We did it, we succeeded,” they chanted. “Calm” and “confident” in the decision taken at the Congress to be held in Versailles, they celebrated a “historic day”. “That’s a great message we’re sending to the world at a time when reactionaries are gaining ground,” Melanie Vogel replied.

“I am extremely relieved that the Senate did not block this project to constitutionalize abortion, which is massively supported by the French population,” Anne-Cécile Mailfert, president of the Women’s Foundation, said in AFP. Now we can’t wait for March 4.” For his part, Laurence Rossignol welcomed “the victory of all French women and men”. “The polls were a strong argument,” he insists. Thus, France can become the first country to include the right to abortion in the constitution.
