Nora Hamzavi. “When someone pitches me a project, I ask if the director has any skills.”

From March 8 to 30 at the Folies Bergère, the comedian tells his third and irresistible solo performance. She also reaffirms her support for actresses who have raised their voices against Jacques Doillon, who directed her CE2:.

Anxiety is his trademark, the fertile ground for his inspiration. But after relying on the pains of motherhood, Nora Hamzawi explores another source of anxiety: time. In his third solo show in fifteen years, the comedian scans and mocks the way current events and social movements (identity, feminist, etc.) affect his mental health, his life as a couple, his lifestyle. . Between two performances and writing sessions for an upcoming photo novel (Ed. du Seuil), she talks about this new show and her projects, and returns to the work of Jacques Doillon, a filmmaker with whom she shot in 2020 and who Judith recently accused of Godresh. sexual assault.

Madame Figaro: What is the general thread of your new show, which will also be on tour at the Folies Bergère from March 8 to 30?

Nora Hamzaoui. My pathological need to create optimism. It’s not a secret. I’m naturally quite anxious. Also, to deal with anxiety provoking news, I often take the opposite approach – I don’t want to talk about serious topics, I complain about my boyfriend when he’s depressed… I’ve always been obsessed with happiness, and there’s more chaos growing around me, on my part. the more I try to compensate. No doubt it also has to do with my son, for whom I am seeking relief as well.

You talk about the impact of time on your privacy…

Today, the world is explained to us in a theoretical way. we listen to podcasts and columns, we read Mona Scholle’s books, we watch videos… We are immersed in a society of images and words that, by gently instilling; alter the way we perceive or be. With feminist movements and shifting patriarchy, for example, there is a real transformation affecting the way women position themselves in the world and in their relationships.

How have you changed since the last one-on-one? ?

I turned 40! As I get older, my personal anxieties lessen and I definitely trust myself more. I, for one, manage myself a little better physically. I also take a step back. I don’t see myself complaining about a bad review when I see the struggles others are going through. I don’t know if it’s age, wisdom or chaos that leads me there, but I see everything.

Does writing help you calm your anxieties? ?

Above all, it is the real, the concrete, the trivial that calms me down. When I discuss anxiety-inducing news with a friend, such as the US election, I always reply: “Anyway, we’ll have to go on living, trading, doing laundry…” In this world where nothing seems to work. going well, life in all its strange aspects takes over. This is what I cling to. This dichotomy is everywhere, including on social media, where we go from beauty tutorials to images of assault in a split second.

You write, direct and produce your own show. When cinema calls you, is it easy to just be an actress? ?

On the set, completely. But I have a professional bias when I read scripts. I’m so used to starting with myself for shows that sometimes I get distracted when the character I’m offered is far from my personality. I wonder why the director thinks about me, what he projected from the comedian or the columnist, I tell myself that he will be disappointed… But I try to take care of myself, and above all tell myself that too is the cinema. for: to move.

after Double lives And Irma Novel you will be out of time June 19 by Olivier Assayas. Tell us about this reunion.

Olivier’s great fortune is that he chooses his actors by their nature. His scripts are jewels, but he asks us to add a bit of our material. Out of time, which we shot in his childhood home, is an autobiographical film about two brothers confined to their partner. I also gave a speech recently Stolen picture by Pascal Bonitzer, which I loved Nothing about Robert. It’s an ensemble film where I play a humble family lawyer who finds a painting by Egon Schiele (released on May 1, Editor’s note)

I refuse to spread [CE2, de Jacques Doillon] or this co-operation, so as not to interfere with what seems to me to be an essential action.

Nora Hamzavi

Have you played too? CE2: Jacques Doillon’s latest film, whose theatrical release has just been postponed. Judith Godresh filed a complaint against him for sexual harassment when she was 14 years old. Other actresses have mentioned abuse…

When I made this film, this was the topic I was interested in: school bullying. There were similar problems at my son’s school, where I met Doillon. his son is also a student there. I feel sad for the technicians and my colleagues that their work is indirectly related to this problem. For me too. Whenever I am offered a project, I ask if the director has any problems, what experiences they have had with others… For personal reasons, I learned about the abuse of power by men at a very young age. I am informed about the topic, I am very attentive to it. I was also against the release of the film.

How did you feel when the affair started?

I first thought of Judith Godrech, of all women who have the courage to break out of silence. I refuse to refer to the film or this collaboration, so as not to interfere with what seems to me to be an essential action. When a victim of aggression or violence has the courage to speak, we systematically soften their words, confronting them with all kinds of arguments; Be patient if someone says: “Everything went well for Nora on set” and that my experience and these few unimportant words are above or minimize the words that really need to be said.
