Find out why Bidu is not played by a real-world animal in the live-action series “Franjinha e Milena em Busca da Ciência”
This Tuesday, the 27th, the series “Franjinha e Milena em Busca da Ciência” premieres in the MAX catalog (formerly HBO Max), featuring the duo created by Mauricio de Sousa in a live-action adventure to unlock the secrets of time travel. Remember the trailer!
In addition to the characters that give the work its title, there is also the presence of Franjinha’s smart and inseparable dog: Bidu, who in the story became responsible for uniting the curious Milena and the red-haired scientist, in addition to having a super important role: narrating the events of the series!
Even though Franjinha and Milena appear played by real people, since the actors Fabricio Gabriel It is Bia Lisboa are responsible for making the characters come to life, the same does not happen with Bidu, who this time is not played by a real dog.
Why?
The reason why Bidu takes shape through a doll was explained by the director of the plot, Mauro D’Addio, in an exclusive interview with RECREIO. The filmmaker said that there are several reasons why the choice was made, and among them is the creation of a completely new universe within the live-action titles of Turma da Mônica.
First, we wanted to brand this series as another universe. It is a universe that has not yet been seen in live-action. It is not a continuation of Daniel Rezende’s films [diretor de ‘Turma da Mônica: Laços’ e ‘Lições’]although we really liked and learned a lot from the whole process that Dani implemented and Dani came to participate in the series through artistic supervision, but we wanted to highlight that it was another universe”, began explaining D’Addio.
Furthermore, the director emphasized that the demands that Bidu plays in the plot “were not achievable as a real dog”. This happens because the character has different facial expressions, is used as comic support in several scenes, narrates several of the events carried out by Franjinha and Milena, participates in scientific experiments and much more.
More than that, there is also a personal desire to D’Addioas the filmmaker revealed that he always wanted to bring techniques similar to the one used to bring Bidu to the series’ plot.
I think there is also a little bit of my side, of my training. I started working at TV Cultura in the early 2000s and I always really liked the language of puppets. I always really wanted to bring this to television in a new way, with animatronics or techniques that make the doll more realistic.”
“So I think that was the idea, it was to give this Bidu a new look that we had never seen before and, at the same time, everyone would look at it and say ‘it’s Bidu’”, concluded the director.
It is worth mentioning that the full chat also included the participation of Marina Filipe, executive producer of Kids content at Warner Bros. Discovery, where topics such as: what the series’ recording locations were, how it was possible for scientific subjects to be covered in a simple way, why Bidu was chosen as narrator, and much more.
